Like Always

At 5am, without him

the corridor is empty.

He was not there

to brush his hairy body

between my legs.

I kept the window open

all night,

but I did not find him

peeping through the glass

like always.

I had breakfast,

his remain untouched.

He walks first

in the cool breeze

before the sun colors the sky.

I went on

tackling my task list

but his absence keeps popping up

like the sun's light

on the window's metal frames.

At 9 am, as I stepped out

to inspect the van's wheels,

I recalled how I found him

lying still

as dead as a forgotten stuffed toy,

with eyes wide-open,

emotionless like always,

under the van.

I packed him up

into a plastic bag

for the garbage truck

to pick up.

Oh Joel, I am so sorry. How sad to lose a pet. Their loss does leave an emptiness. The plastic bag gave me a bit of a start. We bury our animals out in the pasture and when we happen to come near the place they are buried they are remembered with a special prayer. (Over 45 years in one place, there have been a few dogs, cats, horses and bunnies.) One advantage to living in the country. I still feel they are nearby.

It was grieving day at home with my two teen-age daughters grieving hard for the cat. In the city, it's the only way to dispose.

I am posting a revision in the workshop forum.

You never cease to amaze me.

Very good writing about a very real situation.

The sadness within the lines are like a broken heart herz.png

Hope your daughters will remember the cat.....

what was his name?

Thank you, pawnshop. They named the cat "Bajing". I posted a revision of this poem in the Workshop forum.

Joel so sorry. You expressed the feelings so well.

I loved this expression:

in the cool breeze

before the sun colors the sky.

Sounds wonderful. I know how is the feelings when you lost a pet.

I had dogs. Last summer my dog died icon_sad.gif . And then after some months, the day before New Year, I lost the other dog - the son of my other dog. I couldn't stop to cry.

very well that you expressed in this poem.

Thank you for sharing
