A Daily Pond

Feathery brown needles, blown away from tops

of Leyland cypresses, lie still on the pond’s surface,

obscuring my awaited sight of bass circling beneath.

I wish for a strong breeze to push the debris, to open

an expected view through clear water fed by a spring

from underneath the man-made watering-hole for cattle.

Before I turn to continue my long walk, the clouds shift

to reflect the sun’s rays from the tan cover, floating

with enough slight movement to constantly change the hues.

I realize my fortunate rare sight, which will soon enough

shift with the winds or the muzzles of thirsty cows

pushed through random gatherings of nature’s doing.

Tomorrow, another pond will offer a new viewing

and a different pleasure, or disappointment if rain

keeps me inside, wondering how it would present.

Larsen M. Callirhoe

reminds me of tropical storm debby and all the rain falling down in northern florida. excellent poem franklin. i love the day dream feel but keeping it real at the same time. that feat in itself is impressive.

There's much rich imagery to enjoy here-- I particularly liked the idea of pausing before turning, to catch the sunlight in iridescent hues of colour on the fish-- also “the muzzles of thirsty cows” . The last verse has a philosophical shrug about it that rounds things off nicely.
