Gatekeeper

Spring ephemerals

perform quickly in the sun.

Carpet of colors.

Their stage is open briefly

before the curtain of leaves.

Short, well crafted and seasonally appropriate. Has been much on my mind as of late but you captured it perfectly.

Many Thanks,

Juris

And they just got dumped on with more snow.

I have no recollection of snow in May here.

The new climate, I fear . . .

Love your tanka, Sorry I couldn't resist.

White on Spring colors

snow dumps on April's flowers

in early May.

Yellows, purples, blues and reds,

laced by winter's frozen flakes

David W. Parsley

Hi Gatekeeper, I really like this capture of youth with its spontaneous, fleeting beauty. Such a fine pleasure, too, to see the respect for form and the common root of haiku and tanka: a complete haiku coupled with a reply, honoring syllable count and other ancient conventions. Co-best of all, it has the enlightened feel of those contemplative roots, the airy transparency breathed through the ageless practitioners of this art. I am wondering if I have ever read a purer (despite the opening explication of season) or better tanka.

Plaudits!

High praise, indeed.

Deserved? While there have been years of study and practice, I find little to compare it with these days.

Thanks.
