Our weary flag

now and again hangs

in tatters among the briars

of contention and confusion.

Dont tread on me

Divided we fall

Hang together or

hang separately.

Red stripes continually

replenished with willing blood

the field of stars increasingly

honored with white stones.

Carried bravely through fields

here and over there, falling,

lifted again and again to

cries of Let me!

A memory of one I've kept

and carried to new posts

to salute a thousand times

or more, with sharp honor

Now it snags again in thorns,

clinging to impose its values,

knowing how many fallen ones

it covers.
