And if the frame of stillness should be broken by the forgery

revision3

They sit or stroll, stretch or sprawl,
parade top hat and parasol;
dreamers cooling in pools of shade,
this butterfly day never fades.

Steamboats, sailboats, bathers at play,
mothers, daughters, girl with bouquet;
a monkey craves that girl's fair hair,
to steal flowers with simian flair.

A lazy rower smokes his pipe,
sewing in dreams his busy wife;
a forger fools in points of light,
he wants to frame a flock in flight.

That little boy with fishing rod,
his happy stare's a little odd;
forever on a hook these bait
weighted in Sunday faces their fate .

They sit or stroll, stretch or sprawl,
parade top hat and parasol;
the forger lost in pools of shade,
the light of day must never fade.

a forger fools in points of light,
unfettered monkey flees and frights

that lady with the fishing rod,
her attire just a little odd;
fish tugging bait wakes her horror,
faces of others turn in terror.

They sit or stroll, stretch or sprawl,
parade top hat and parasol;
the forger ghosts in pools of shade,
the light of day must never fade.

original

They sit or stroll, stretch or sprawl,
parade top hat and parasol;
the dreamers cooling in pools of shade,
this butterfly day may never fade.

Steamboats, sailboats, bathers at play,
mothers, daughters, girl with bouquet;
a tethered monkey craves fair hair,
to steal pink petals with simian flair.

A lazing rower smoking his pipe,
sewing in dreams his busy wife;
a forger fooling in points of light,
unfettered monkey flees and frights

the lady with the fishing rod,
her attire not a little odd;
fish sucking bait awakes her terror,
the faces of others turn in horror.

They sit or stroll, stretch or sprawl,
parade top hat and parasol;
the forger lost in pools of shade,
the light of day will never fade.

Hi badger, This was fun to read. I was first struck by the form. Quatrains, rhyme and with some gentle editing it could have a consistent syllabic pattern. The rhythm of the opening two lines and repeated later grabs the reader and is almost emulated in the subsequent couplets. If it were mine I'd play with it. It felt good to read the easy rhyme. It gave it a whimsical, musical sound. I liked this a lot...

Thanks Tink. I'll have a ponder about a more regular form.
