Poetry Magnum Opus

Recommended Posts

Crock for drainage, and dark soil
busy with woodlice.
She overflows the earthenware
with basil, oregano, thyme.
Will they wither in this heat? Leaf
like long lost scrolls.
She buries prayers, that cilice
of barbed vows,

and breathes the shiver of perfume
along her skin.
This Magdalene
has earth beneath her finger nails.

I love the mood. I did read up on the Cistercian order and learned that, "The original emphasis of Cistercian life was on manual labour and self-sufficiency, and many abbeys have traditionally supported themselves through activities such as agriculture and brewing ales." The last lines are factual.
