Sleepover

Do not hide under granny's bed
my dad tells me. And so I do.
I find a heap of bones and one
that's wet and red. I guess it's fresh.

I cross the landing. Clocks counting
how long I can hold my breath. I try
the airing cupboard. Nice and snug,
it gurgles like an empty tummy.

There's damp clothes, but I'm swamp happy,
a Huckleberry Finn. My dad
could skin a badger, taught me how
to navigate the black and white.

I have his blade, a wolvish grin.
Her blue eyes blink. I hear a whimper.

OMG, the images here are exploding in my brain.   This is one I want to come back to and absorb.  "My dad could skin a badger"   What?  is this where your screen name came from?    I'll be back.  I'm being called/

Thank you Tink. The festive period tends to bring out the folktales in me. The badger story is actually a revelation from an interview that Ted Hughes' daughter gave.

And I'm glad it does, because this is seriously good. As for badgers, well … there is THIS.
