revision

It's not easy being a second child
and more so when your dad's a laureate.
Live for your craft, not art, he'd say.
And so he didn't try, but took to crime,
small time, a shoplifter, a petty thief.
That got respect from kids. He acted out
their accents and lingo too. They couldn't
find the posh and Jewish him. Got older,
learnt method, wood-working skills, made
canoes, could hunt and fish, survive forest life,
became a movie star. It was him being
not him. He melded voices for the many.
And so he ran away to find his craft:
an apprentice, repairing shoes, learning
from a master craftsman. No longer
playing a role, being himself. A shoemaker.

Badge,  Loved this story.  Both versions.  But,  the same though changed line, I don't understand in either version.  Not that I have to understand.

for being Jewish and posh

find the posh and Jewish him

The word Jewish stops me in both lines seems out of left field and I dont understand its use in either line.   Not asking for explaination, just showing you where I stumble in the very fine poem.

Thanks Tink. Daniel Day-Lewis was bullied as a child. There is an antisemitic element in areas of London (presently dividing the Labour party). Lewis learnt to hide his heritage and background to avoid being bullied.

A fine paean. Almost lyrical. Definitely mythic.
