Workshop

(Rules) Please read before posting ...

In this forum, post poems that you intend to revise for which you would like to receive constructive criticism. Please also criticize at least one poem posted here by another member for every poem of your own that you post here.

Bear in mind that criticism (although it should be civil) might not be flattering. Rather, it could be downright harsh. Even so, outright nasty criticism (as determined by site administration and moderators) will not be tolerated and may be deleted.

Some guidelines:

1. It is considered proper decorum in a workshop setting to always thank those who criticize your work even if the critique is less than flattering.

2. It is also considered proper decorum for a critic to refrain from commenting negatively on or otherwise addressing directly the critiques of others. If you would like to criticize a poem, and you disagree with another critic, simply make a critique of your own that states the opposite. Do not quote the other critic or refer to him in your critique. Please do not start or engage in a flame war.

3. Generally, one workshops a poem because s/he would like to revise the work, wants to know if a poem is working, and/or why it is not. It is usually not considered useful in a workshop environment to explain your poem. If you receive a critique, and the critic just doesn't get your poem, take it at that. Look at the other critiques you receive and use them as a guide to gauge that critic's critique. Perhaps that critic didn't read your poem well or is simply wrong. On the other hand, if everyone says similar things that indicate to you that they don't "get" your poem, maybe your poem is not working the way you would like it to work. Use the feedback that you get as you see fit when you revise.

Some examples of what is deemed acceptable (by the administration here) and what is not:

Telling someone to read thousands of poems before ever trying to write another is not acceptable nor is referring to someone's honest efforts at writing as their "typing." Conversely, if some member comes into the workshop, and declares that s/he is posting a poem that s/he just wrote in five minutes, it would be fair to ask that member how s/he can expect others to spend more time on the critique than s/he did on the poem itself. Good critiques take time to write, and only those who have already put some effort into the poems for which they would like criticism should post them here.

The site administration will monitor this section closely. Some standards of basic literacy should be met and maintained by poets and critics in this section. Using internet shorthand like "u" for you and "cuz" for because is usually not taken seriously in workshop environments. The bar for what constitutes an acceptable critique may be raised by the administration from time to time.

Very Important
