  2. Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Southeast Asian Verse Viet Nam is the easternmost country of Southeast Asia bordered by China, Laos, Cambodia, and the South China Sea. Its literary history goes back to the 10th century in folk verse (Ca dau). Many of the forms are named simply for the syllable count, word count or line count. Because of the musical and complicated rhythm and rhyme of Viet poetry, it is rich in "wordplay". Onomatopoeia is common and direct imagery (phu), metaphoric imagery (ti), and the emotion or tone (hung) are balanced. The luc-bat (six-eight) is the most popular of Viet folk verse sung by minstrels and peasants from the 11th century. The form is made up of a number of tonal rhythms with both end and medial rhyme. The early pieces were meant to be chanted, and later became limited block print editions circulated among friends and connoisseurs and printed in ch nom, the script of the 11th century. There is, in Vietnamese, a syllabic tone in the pattern. The defining feature other than the tonal pattern that cannot be duplicated in English is the climbing rhyme pattern. The Viet poem The Tale of Kieu by Nguyen Du alternates between flat or even tones and sharp or oblique tones which cannot be duplicated in English. The form specifies the placement of flat or sharp sounds which are impossible to emulate in English, but if you are willing to overlook that one feature, an English Song That Luc Bat is a challenge some might like to attempt. The final couplet can be a repetition of L12 followed by a repetition of L1 or it could simply be a 6 syllable rhymed couplet, best using the last linking I rhyme. When written in octaves the rhyme aaxaaaxa bbxbbbxb ect. The tonal scheme appears to be in alternating the flat and sharp sound in the 2nd and 4th words like the Tho Bon Chu. Tho Sau Chu or Six-Word Verse is measured by word count and uses either alternate of envelope rhyme. It can be written in quatrains or octaves. When written in octaves it is called Six-Eight Poetry The elements of the Tho Sau Chu are: stanzaic, written in any number of quatrains. It can also be written in any number of octaves. measured by word count, 6 words per line. rhymed, either alternate, abab cdcd etc. (when written as Six-Eight abababab cdcdcdcd etc.) or envelope, abba cddc etc. (when written in octaves abbaabba cddccddc etc.) Tho Bay Chu or Seven Word Poetry is written with seemingly more flexible tonal pattern than most Viet verse with the exception of when an end word is flat, the 3rd word must be sharp and when the end word is sharp, the 3rd word in the line must be flat. The elements of the Tho Bay Chu are: stanzaic, written in any number of quatrains. measured by number of words, 7 words per line. rhymed, tonal rhyme appears to be at the discretion of the poet except if and end word is flat, the 3rd word of the line must be sharp or if the end word is sharp, the 3rd word of the line must be flat. End rhyme aaxa bbxb etc. or xaxa xbxb etc. Tho Tam Chu or Eight Word Poetry appears to be more flexible in stanza length as well as tonal and end rhyme. The rhyme schemes are patterns I found in actual poems. It appears to me that as long as there is rhyme, it probably doesn't matter what the pattern is. The elements of the Tho Tam Chu are: stanzaic, written in any number of either tercets, quatrains or septets. measured by the number of words in the line, 8 words per line. rhymed, tonal rhyme is flexible except, if the end word is sharp then the 3rd word is also sharp and words 5 and 6 are flat.     Terror at Twilight (a Seadhna Sonnet)

    Terror at Twilight a Séadna* (pronounced: shay-na) Sonnet by Frank Coffman Doom! the blood-red sun is dying. Clings it close on western rim. Curséd Night is quickly nighing, Thick clouds weep; day graying grim. Grim the shape that in the shadows Grows at ancient forest’s edge— A Creature dread from Hell’s hollows Made by spell of Yellow Mage Magic dark has dragged it hither. Earth is not it’s normal home. And, now here, we know not whither It will wend, nor rather roam. Roam it shall! The Mage has bidden Spell took from page of hidden tome. “The Rules for the Irish SÉADNA The basic requir4ements of the form: 1. Quatrains of 8-7-8-7 syllables 2. Lines 1 and 3 end on 2-syllable words 3. Lines 2 and 4 end on 1-syllable words 4. Lines 2 and 4 end-rhyme [I’ve used slant rhyme in section 2 << my variation] The more difficult requirements of the form: 5. Every line has alliteration 6. The final syllable of line 1 alliterates with A stressed word of line 2 7. Line 3 rhymes [I’ve used slant rhymes << my variation] with the penultimate word of line 4 8. There are TWO aicill rhymes [cross rhyming the final word of a line with either the first or an internal word in the next in the second couplet]. 9. Final word of line four alliterates with the preceding stressed word [Any preceding stressed word << my variation—also, section 2 fails in this, and only the ending couplet fully fulfills it] 10.     Terza Rima or Diaspora Sonnet

    Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart English Verse The Terza Rima or Diaspora Sonnet, appeared in England in the 19th century. It makes use of the interweaving pattern and forward movement of the Italian Terza Rima. This variation of the sonnet is written in tercets with an interlocking rhyme scheme and concludes with a refrain or invocation in the form of a heroic couplet. The Greek word "diaspora" means "scattered abroad". The Bible used the word to refer to the Jews who lived outside of Palestine after the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem in 587 B.C. The Jews scattered into the Greek Roman cities and later further north. They maintained their Jewish identity while adapting to the language and customs of their new homes by continuing to honor Jewish traditions. Perhaps in regard to this Sonnet form, it refers back to the original Italian Terza Rima form continuing its interlocking rhyme while adapting to a new language and new frame. The elements of the Terza Rima Sonnet are: a quatorzain, made up of 4 tercets and concluding with a rhyming couplet. metric, iambic pentameter. composed with a volta (a non physical gap) or pivot (a shifting or tilting of the main line of thought) sometime after the 2nd tercet. similar to the Spenserian Sonnet in which the poem progresses forward developing the metaphor, conflict, idea or question. The epiphany of the poem arrives logically in the couplet. rhymed with up to 6 rhymes with an interlocking rhyme scheme is aba bcb cdc ded ee. written so that the concluding rhyming couplet serves as a refrain or invocation. Ode to the West Make me thy lyre, even as the forest is: What if my leaves are falling like its own!   5. Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart Invented Forms Poet's Collective, is where Lawrence Eberhart has gathered forms he has found interesting. He usually simply finds a form, copies and pastes the information giving the source credit, analyses the frame, maybe adds a comment and then writes some of the best example poems I've encountered. Many of the invented forms unique to the site were originally found at All Poetry, A poetry community where there are some poetry courses and many blog like forums that include poetry of the members as well as information they might want to share such as new forms they might have run across or even invented themselves. Here are many of the forms collected at Poet's Collective. 5/3 Meter Verse is a stanzaic form that I assume Lawrence Eberhardt to be the creator. What appears to be a very simple form is not simple at all. It is about mastering metric patterns. The elements of the 5/3 meter are: stanzaic, written in 5 or more quatrains. metric, accentual syllabic verse, measuring syllable count and metric patterns. Written with alternating lines of 5 and 3 syllables. Syllables per line 5-3-5-3. Metric pattern, the odd numbered lines are a iamb, da Dum, followed by an anapest, da Dum da, and the even numbered lines are a dactyl, Dum da Dum. rhymed, alternating rhyme scheme A1B1A2B2 cdcd efef ghgh A1B1A2B2. The odd lines end on feminine rhyme, the even on masculine rhyme composed repeating the first stanza as the last stanza in refrain. Example poem The 13 Line Sonnet is simply writing any sonnet form that ends with a rhymed couplet and condensing L13 and L14 into one iambic pentameter line with internal rhyme, invented by Marcy Jarvis. I can only assume the intent is to include the standard elements of "the sonnet" with the exception of being shortened by one line. The elements of the 13 Line Sonnet are: a lyrical poem written in 13 lines, made up any combination of stanzaic forms that could result in a total of 12 lines followed by a single line. metric, iambic pentameter rhymed, variable rhyme scheme with the last line, L13 internally rhymes with the end word. x x x x d x x x x d pivot or turn according to the sonnet form chosen Sunday Morning Six A.M. chill carried on the sea mist, drenched divulgation, dampening my waking will to get up and tame my artist. The elements of the 15/10 Verse are: stanzaic, written in any number of alternating quatrains of 15 syllable lines and 10 syllable lines. syllabic, the 15 syllable lines begin with an anapest da Dum da followed by 12 syllables, metric pattern at discretion of poet. The 10 syllable line metric pattern is at the discretion of the poet however most often 10 syllables equal 5 iambs. daDum daDum daDum daDum daDum. rhymed, rhyme scheme, the 15 line quatrains are made up of rhymed couplets and the 10 lined quatrains are alternating rhyme. aabb cdcd eeff ghgh etc Example poem Acrostic Tribute Sonnet is an invented sonnet form by Ron Morris and is essentially any sonnet frame but with the added device that the first letter of each line spells out the name of person honored in the poem. The elements of the Acrostic Tribute Sonnet are: a quatorzain, with a stanzaic pattern at discretion of the poet. metric, preferably iambic pentameter. rhymed, rhyme scheme at the discretion of the poet. pivot placement at the discretion of the poet. composed as a tribute to someone. an acrostic, the name of the one honored is spelled out in the fist letter of each line. Alphabet Haiku shouldn't really be considered haiku since there is no Ah ha moment and metaphor is allowed. It is simply, but strictly the common 5-7-5 frame with all words beginning with the same letter of the alphabet. It was invented by Amanda J Norton. The elements of Amanda's Dark Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 2 seven lined stanzas. syllabic, 14 syllable lines. rhymed, rhyme scheme aabbcca abbccdd volta optional the initial letter of each line in S1 alliterates with the initial letter of the corresponding line in S2 Amanda’s Pinch is an invented verse form created by Amanda Norton is a syllabic form that appears on the page as if it was pinched in the middle. The elements of the “Pinch” are: an octastich, a poem in 8 lines. syllabic, syllables per line 12-12-10-8-8-10-12-12 rhymed, rhyme scheme abcDDcba L4 is repeated in L5 allierated, every line shout have alliteration centered on the page Anaduo is an anapestic stanzaic form created by Lisa LaGrange at All Poetry with an acephalous anapestic first metric foot of each line. The elements of the Anaduo are: stanzaic, written in any number of sixains made up of 2 tercets. metric, accentual syllabic, L1,L2 and L4, L5 are anapestic tetrameter, L3 and L6 are anapestic trimeter. All lines begin with an acephalous metric foot. anapestic = 2 unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable, da da DUM, acephalous = headless. the first syllable of a metric foot lopped off. anapest da da DUM acephalous anapest da DUM. or it may be easier to understand if we said L1,L2 are made up of an iamb followed by 3 anapests and L3 made up of an iamb followed by 2 anapests repeat. Syllables per line 11-11-8-11-11-8. rhymed, rhyme scheme aabccb ddeffe etc Example poem Arabian Sonnet appears to be a little known invented form. The only name associated with the origins of the form is Jem Farmer of All Poetry. Other than the defining features of frame and rhyme scheme, it is assumed the components of the classic sonnet apply. The elements of the Arabian Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 2 quatrains followed by 2 tercets. metric, iambic pentameter. rhymed, aaaa bbbb ccc ddd. turned in the 9th line. Avebury Air by Jem Farmer Arabian Onegin Sonnet is a variation of the Arabian Sonnet which simply includes repeat rhyme in a unique pattern. The elements of the Arabian Onegin Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 2 quatrains followed by 2 tercets. metric, iambic pentameter. rhymed,AaAa BBbb CcC DDd Anapeat is a verse form create by Susan Budig that won a Forms Challenge at Writer's Digest despite somewhat misleading terminology used in describing the elements of the form. The creator did include a poem as an example which I am sure was the clincher for the win and I have chosen to describe the elements of the poem which more accurately convey her intent. (The original description of the form uses the word "anaphora' liberally and yet anaphora appears no where in the example poem. The correct term for the element referred to would be tumbling refrain. Much like in the French form, the Retourne) The elements of the Anapeat are: a verse form made up of 5 quintains. (5 line stanzas) line length and meter at the discretion of the poet rhyme at the discretion of the poet. composed with tumbling refrain in which L1 of S1 is repeated as L2 in S2, L3 in S3, L4 in S4 and L5 in S5. titled using all or a portion of the refrain. Example Poem This poem by Lawrence Eberhart tries to use the original description but in the end follows the elements of Ms Budig's poem rather than her description. Arquain is a simple syllabic verse form with only the 7 syllables lines rhymed. created by Madison Shaw aka Arkbear @ All Poety. The elements of the Arquain are: a verse form made up of 3 quatrains. (12 lines total) syllabic, syllables per line 1-2-3-4 5-7-7-5 4-3-2-1 rhyme, xxxx xaax xxxx , x being unrhymed. centered on the page. Arquain String is simply a string of 3 Arquains (36 lines total). The rhyme of the 7 syllable lines can change from arquain to arquain. Example poem Asean Sonnet or Asean Royal Flush Sonnet, is simply an Italian sonnet in mono-rhyme. The variation is somehow associated with South East Asia but further detail is still illusive. The elements of the Asean Sonnet are: lyrical. a quatorzain made up of an octave followed by a sestet. metric, iambic pentameter. mono-rhymed, aaaaaaaaaaaaaa. turned on the 9th line. The Architect by Jem Farmer Atrina, created by Keith Metcalf Drew at All Poetry is a verse form with a complex refrain pattern which in effect require that you need write only 9 lines of the 18 lines total. The rest are all refrain. The elements of the Atrina are: a verse form made up of 3 quatrains followed by a sestet. (18 lines total) syllabic, all lines are 8 syllables. rhymed, rhyme scheme, A1A2aA1 B1B2bB1 C1C2cC1 A1A2B1B2C1C2. Caps represent a refrain. composed with each quatrain with it's own refrain, L1 repeated as L4. The sestet is made of the first 2 lines of each quatrain repeated in sequence. Example Poem The Bardic Sonnet is an invented sonnet form by William Kenneth Keller that uses the Shakespearean Sonnet and adds a complicated rhyme pattern. The elements of the Bardic Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 3 quatrains followed by a couplet. metric, iambic pentameter volta arrives late in the frame, sometime in the 3rd quatrain or even waiting until the declamatory couplet. rhymed, alternating rhyme, abab cdcd efef gg, but here is where it gets a little tricky. The rhyme is found both internal as well as at the end of the line. The internal or interlaced rhyme (echoed internally with another line.) is true or perfect rhyme (last stressed vowel and last consonant are echoed) but the end rhyme is consonant rhyme (end sounds consonate, ball/ fell) and including framed rhyme (the consonant preceding the vowel consonates with the consonant after the vowel. bit/bat ). To take it a bit further, the inventor requests that it be strict consonant rhyme as used in ancient Irish forms and designates interlaced rhyme to be echoed in the first 3 metric feet.The couplet contains both the end consonant rhyme and interlaced rhyme Capital = perfect rhyme lower case=consonant rhyme. .x x x A x x x x x a x B x x x x x x x b x x x x A x x x x a x x x x x B x x x b The Chandler Sonnet is an invented verse form introduced by B Chandler that although it is called a sonnet, has nothing in common with the sonnet form. The elements of the Chandler Sonnet are: a poem in 22 lines, written in 3 quatrains, an octave and a couplet in that order. syllabic, the first 3 quatrains are dodecasyllabic, the quatrain is hendecasyllabic and the couplet is heptasyllabic lines. rhymed, turned on only 4 rhymes, abab baba abab cdccdcdd ee. Dual Sonnet is an invented form that basically is 2 sonnet forms, or at least rhyme schemes, in one. Created by Allen R Murray the end rhyme of one form is found mid line and another sonnet form rhyme at the end of the line. The elements are: a quatorzain made up of either octave/sestet or three quatrains and couplet. metric, iambic pentameter. rhymed, select two rhyme schemes from recognized sonnet forms. One rhyme scheme should appear mid line and the other at the end of the line. xxxxaxxxxA lower case and uppercase simply indicates different rhyme sounds. xxxxbxxxxB xxxxaxxxxB xxxxbxxxxA Dueces Sonnet is a restricted invented form turned on only two rhymes. Created by Mary Lou Healy, the pivot placement is also specifically limited to either L9 and L11 at the rhyme pattern change. He is credited with the creation of a multitude of sonnet forms. I have found essays written by him but no central blog or website produced by him. Larry Eberhart at Poet's Collective calls him a renown sonneteer and Reyes apparently has a twitter account where he declares himself a Sonnet G Master. The name Jose Rizal M. Reyes suggests that he is either a descendant or at least named in honor of Jose Rizal y Mercado, novelist and national hero of the Philippines. At Poet's Collective Reyes is said to have suggested there are three types of sonnets, those of the head, those of the heart, and those of the hand. I am assuming he is saying sonnets of the head are sonnets that follow the classic frame of established sonnet forms. Those of the heart capture the meditative soul of the sonnet but not necessarily conform to a particular frame. Those of the hand, play with the classic frames and tweak them with innovative rhyme scheme, stanzaic patterns, meter and other poetic devices. Poet's Collective calls sonnets of the hand, Gadget Sonnets. There are hundreds of invented sonnets of the hand all over the internet and many were created by Reyes. (most found at Poet's Collective) I question whether these multitude of "sonnet forms" have ever had more than one or maybe two other poems written in these frames therefore they would not technically meet the definition of established form but rather are simply nonce forms. But I admire the tenacity to create such a volume of work and I include here what I have found of those forms created by the "Sonnet G Master" himself, Jose Rizal M Reyes. Many of the invented forms on this page use the frame of the English Sonnet, and simply change the rhyme scheme. So for the sake of saving space I will simply indicate "English Sonnet" and include the changed rhyme scheme rather than all of the elements each time.     The Path Discordant storms erupt. The path goes dark while whipping wind and smashing rain complain and push the day to night, the blackness stark. The force of creation collects its cost and all the universe joins the cyclical flow while plunged in gloom where rants an unseen show. The earth is purged, the putrid air is washed. From recalled shadows cast above and below disjointed thoughts intrude and wander lost. Perception stumbles, blinded, spun and tossed and latent dreams turn labored, gray and low. It is interesting that in researching I found Keats wrote several sonnets, mostly in the Petrarchan or Shakespearean form. But this one sonnet, the frame of which he himself did not duplicate, sparked imitation and a sonnet form named for him. Primarily written in tercets with its own unique rhyme scheme and irregular meter, Keats demonstrates that a stanza is not set apart by rhyme scheme nor metric pattern but by a thought. He includes all of the components of a classic sonnet but he deliberately scrambles them. An Ode and a Sonnet are named for him. Clearly, if you had not already noticed, John Keats (1795-1821) is an influential poet. Troubadours are from the Middle Ages,12th - 13th centuries, named from the Occitan verb "trobar" = to compose or invent. The troubadour should be distinguished as composers of verse from the jongluer who was usually his servant of lesser class and a minstrel who merely performed the troubadour's composition. The troubadours from the south of France and northern Italy planted the seeds for many verse forms still used today such as the alba, canson, sestina, sonnet, etc. These poets were often of nobility and wealth, including 23 princes and 1 king, Because of his station the troubadour was given great latitude in speech and wrote about love as well as politics from their own perspective. In the 200 year span of popularity, there were only around 400 known troubadours all together. Jaufre Rudel, Arnaut Daniel Guiraut de Bornein and Bernart de Ventadorn. are a few of the troubadours who's works have survived.     Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart English Verse Although the sonnet began in Italy in the 13th century, Thomas Wyatt 1503-1542, was one of the first English poets to translate and utilize the form. He used the Petrarchan octave but introduced a rhyming couplet at the end of the sestet. His friend the Earl of Surrey also initiated more rhyme. The Italian form was restricted to 5 rhymes. After Wyatt and Surrey the sonnet could have 7 rhymes. They also shifted the sonnet away from the slightly more intellectual and argumentative Petrarchan form, and gave new importance to the ending, declamatory couplet. This Wyatt/Surrey adaptation of the sonnet has not been officially named, at least I haven't found an assigned designation yet. So for the sake of identification I call it the Wyatt/Surrey Sonnet. The elements of the Wyatt/Surrey sonnet are: a quatorzain, written with a Petrarchan octave followed by an envelope quatrain ending with a rhyming couplet. metric, primarily iambic pentameter. the rhyme scheme is abbaabba cddc ee. it is composed with the volta (non physical gap) or pivot (a shifting or tilting of the main line of thought) sometime after the 2nd quatrain. distinguished by the declamatory couplet. It was first attributed to the Italian poet Francesco Berni (1497-1536). This sonnet verse form is often used for satire. The elements of the Caudate Sonnet are: strophic, a Petrarchan Sonnet, followed by a 1/2 line and a heroic couplet, this may also be followed by additional "tails". The tail and couplet are akin to the Bob and Wheel. The poem can be from 17 to 24 lines. metric, the sonnet portion is iambic pentameter. The tail line is iambic trimeter and the subsequent couplets are iambic pentameter. rhymed, abbaabbacdcdcd dee . This 17th century form was created by English poet, John Milton. Milton also took the sonnet out of the category of "love poems" and brought it into the world of politics and social issues. The elements of the Miltonic Sonnet are: a quatorzain, enjambment is used to tighten the sonnet, leaving the 14 lines unbroken by stanzas. metered, iambic pentameter rhymed, uses the Petrarchan rhyme scheme abbaabbacdecde. pivot evolves slowly after L8. composed around the themes of moral issues and political insights. Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart English Verse Bowlesian Sonnet or Australian Sonnet is attributed to English poet, William Lisle Bowles (1762 -1850) whose book of 14 sonnets published in 1789 was heralded for its "simple sincerity" and expression of thought through appreciation for life and nature. His works carried a tender tone and have been described as melodious.Although Bowles was English and probably never travelled to Australia, his sonnets did. The honesty and serenity of his poems struck a chord in what was then England's penal colony and the form was eventually adopted by the Aussies as their own. Poet's Garret tells this story better than I. The elements of the Bowlesian Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 3 quatrains and a couplet. rhymed abba cddc effe gg. metric, iambic pentameter composed with the pivot or volta between the 9th and 13th lines. On hearing the Bells at Sea by William Lisle Bowles 1789 ow sweet the tuneful bells' responsive peal! A stanza is a thought unit in a specific number of lines surrounded by other thought units in a uniform pattern. (This could be an infinite number of combinations, such as 3 quatrains or 2 cinquains or a tercet, a couplet, a tercet, a couplet etc or as in the case of the 2 most popular sonnet forms, either a quatorzain made up of an octave followed by sestet or 3 quatrains followed by a couplet.) Remember these are thought units, however we often show the separation of these thought units with either a space on the page or with rhyme pattern such as ababcdcd which is an octave made up of 2 alternating rhymed quatrains, while abababab is simply an alternating rhymed octave and abab cdcd are 2 quatrains. Jose Rizal M Reyes of the Philippines took the Bowlesian Sonnet, changed the structure of the stanza pattern and called it the Canadian Sonnet.
