Tactful Strategy

From my "Little Tykes" collection further to "A Time To Remember"

There was always something going on, though folk said times were hard.

But it didn't cause us to worry none-- plottin' -- in our back yard.

Rag-and-bone man shouting-- gave us all a start.

Round on a weekly outing with his old horse and cart.

Peewee had a catapult for shooting at tin cans;

he loaded it and back he pulled, then a pellet (by sheer chance)

flew over our wall into the road and we heard a mighty "NNAAAY!"

Rag-and-bone-man shouted "WHOAH!" But the horse was on its way.

Galloping!--- With all it's load-- and him chasing behind.

Scattering bits all up our road, for anyone to find.

"I don't know!" He was heard to say, stamping at the floor.

"Must be my unlucky day-- it's never done that before!"

It came to halt in the high street none too worse for wear;

held by a Bobby on his beat (a good job we weren't there).

During all the nonsense we'd sidled off for tea.

Pictures of innocence were Smudge an' Peewee, Jim 'n' Me.
