Laker’s Quest / Ode to Laker Baskeball

Laker's Quest

This story starts with failed success,
an oxymoron true. But failed
they did when poised for nothing less
to steal the crown though Celts were hailed.

The Laker upstarts in 08
surprised the NBA. Assailed
the league, sneaked up to elevate
but not quite win, those Celts were hailed.

No more the upstarts in 09
they've slammed and jammed, their hearts prevailed,
their turf, the glossy floor of pine,
they play the game where champs are hailed.

With Kobe, Fish and Pao, no saints,
the team is not to be curtailed.
L.O. and Drew will guard the paint
and grasp the win where champs are hailed.

The bench mob's speed and energy
opponents can't deny. Unveiled
this entourage can drain the three!
They're here to win, as champs be hailed.

My Lakers, I believe the best
in basketball today. They've nailed
the number one spot in the west,
soon win it all, as champs be hailed.

Here is an old poem I add here simply to archive it at this site. It is actually one of the first poems I ever wrote. I sent it to the team and got a letter back that they posted it in the locker room.

Ode to Laker Basketball

Exciting anxious bursts of joy and fear,
anticipation grips the waiting din.
The team appears upon the floor, a cheer,
the long awaited game will soon begin.

The breathless surge of rapid running feet.
The sneaky pass behind the back connects.
Staccato rhythm pounding out the beat,
a giant hand above the rim...... rejects.

The speed with which they run the court so small.
The strength of these amazing acrobats
displays of agility and grace in ones so tall,
with hustle plays that do not show in stats.

A hoop that brings the fan up off his seat,
the rivalry that turns a cheer to "boo"....
The shots that miss and "REBOUND" we repeat,
they show a little razzle-dazzle too.

The power felt while watching Shaq, slam...dunk,
brings kindled hopes of winning back to back.
It doesn't matter how the ball is sunk,
determined Foxy takes it to the rack.

The rush of being in the zone equates
with fearless Kobe driving to the hole.
Athletic prowess of the team relates,
the kick outside to Fish to play his role.

We know what Horry brings, play smart,
age takes it's toll on legs but not the mind.
Time slows the body not the heart,
we have the legs of George for speed and kind.

This arena hails tradition deep and sweet,
of Magic, Wilt, Kareem and many more.
In champions and superstars we meet
the hallowed winning L.A. Laker lore.

Go Lakers! :-) I once walked the streets of Boston wearing my black Lakers' jacket :-)

Oh Joel, I knew I liked you~ What a brave soul you are. I've never been to Boston, but I have been to Laker games here in California in Oakland, Sacramento and of course LA. Playoffs begin tomorrow... Go Lakers!

This one should be read aloud and adopted by the team for promotional purposes!

Thanks to Victor for trotting Tink's loyalties out for all to see again. Very revealing, your affection for these semi-bad boys. Harder times now, eh? Fun piece. Now I need to go find a mind bending sonnet...

Tinker: Since we're on the subject of LA, can you tell me of a poetry group that meets around these parts? I am trying to make a serious comeback here, but I prefer the company of the like minded.

This is an old one Victor, Lakers have won 2 world championships since this was written and then imploded in the playoffs last season. It was painful to watch. But thank you for the comments on my writing. I wrote this as an example of the Kyrielle, not great poetry but fun to write.

Hi Dave, Yes you caught me. My 3 great passions, my family, poetry and Laker basketball. Not necessarily in that order. I have been a Laker fan since the Magic Johnson / Kareem Abdul Jabbar Show Time era.

I am sorry I can't help in locating a group in the LA area since I don't live down there. I live in the northern part of the state, above San Francisco. (by territory I should be a Warrior fan or a Sacramento Kings fan - about the same distance either way from my home - but I just can't make that switch so I watch my Lakers on TV by satellite or occasionally go to games up here when they are in town and cheer for my Lakers. I live a dangerous life. My receptionist at my Agency was a "Warrior Girl" 2 years ago and she got me great tickets when the Lakers came to town. In return I let her leave early on game days, it was a long commute. ) I live in a rural area in the coastal mountains. I don't know of any poetry groups up here either. In fact the only people I know who have any interest in poetry are on-line.

And Tony, I know you commented years ago and I didn't respond... sorry, but really I know we are on the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to sports teams so I have let your comments about being crazy to be a Laker fan go. You are probably right, my husband agrees with you.
