Overview of Chinese Poetry with Index

Four Syllable Verse found in Drury's dic-tion-ar-y, appears to be a variation of the Lu Shi verse form Ssu Yen Shih. No background was given for the form.

The elements of Four Syllable Verse are:

  1. stanzaic written in 3 quatrains.
  2. syllabic, lines of 4 syllables each.
  3. rhymed, rhyme scheme aaxa bbcc cdcd.
  4. since I am pretty sure this is just a variation of Ssu Yen Shih, I am adding to Drury's description and include the important feature of all Lu Shi poetry, this should be written with parallels

Stand Off by Judi Van Gorder

    ice blue eyes search
    ready to lurch
    spots prey in flight
    light on his perch

    patient stalker
    quiet gawker,
    fine feathered flirt
    sparrow alert

    down in the dirt
    a killer waits
    songbird is curt
    trills as he baits
