Sport of Kings #26 Poem a Day

Sport of Kings

One snappish morning, late
in Spring he arrives
before the early birds sing.
An eager foal, born
to the land, all knees and hocks,
struggling to stand.

In time his legs will do
the deed and pound
with power, poise and speed
with fluid movement
and stunning grace
to claim the day and win the race.

His strong neck leads
with flash of mane
while muscled sinew stretches long
to plow the turf below his hooves.

Esteemed by man; the sport of kings
since time began.
