    Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms The Rictameter is a popular invented verse form that has popped up on the internet in the last decade. No one seems to take credit as the source. I did find that ShadowPoetry.com does have a slightly different element, in that the first and last 2 syllable word be the same. However, at various other sites, the first 2 syllables need not be a single word and the last 2 syllables need not be the same as the first 2 syllables. The elements of the Rictameter are: a 9 line poem. syllabic verse with graduated then diminishing number of syllables 2-4-6-8-10-8-6-4-2. optional: begin and end the poem with the same 2 syllable word or words. rhymed or unrhymed, if rhymed the scheme is at the discretion of the poet. suitable for light verse or a more serious tone.     Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms The SciFaiku is what the name implies, science fiction haiku an invented verse form introduced by Tom Brinck in 1995. Scifaiku combines science fiction themes with some of the elements of the haiku. The elements of the Scifaiku are: minimal, in the moment with human insight. written with a haiku frame, normally, 17 syllables or less. The poem can be written in the classic 3 lines of 5-7-5 or a variation of line and syllable count.     Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented-verse-forms The Sparrowet is an invented stanzaic form created by Kathrine Sparrow that she calls a variation of the Swap Quatrain. The defining feature is the inversion of the 2 hemistichs of L1 in L6 of each stanza. The elements of the Sparrowet are: stanzaic, written in any number of sixains. syllabic, lines of 8 syllables each. (Often written in iambic tetrameter.)     Terzanelle

    Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms The Terzanelle is a verse form which is a cross between a Terza Rima and a Villanelle. Both the Italian and the French have been given credit for this form probably because of the original forms. However, it appears to have been the creation of “Forms Guru”, Lewis Turco. It merges the interlocking tercets with the tumbling repeated lines. The elements of the Terzanelle are: a poem in 19 lines made up of 5 tercets and ends with a quatrain. metered, most commonly iambic pentameter however if you stray, lines should be of equal length. rhymed A1BA2 bCB cDC dED eFE fA1FA2. Caps are repeated lines. L1 is repeated in L17, L2 is repeated in L6, L3 repeated L19, L5 repeated in L9, L8 repeated in L12, L11 repeated in L18.
  5. Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms Three Poems In One I have found that there are a few invented forms that attempt to create 3 poems in 1 poem. Each has its own unique approach. The feature these forms have in common is the reader must be in on the pattern or they probably won't get it. Cleave Poetry is a poetic genre in which 3 separate poems are intertwined into one woven poem. "The word cleave is a contranym, a word with 2 opposite meanings: verb 1) split or sever along a natural grain or line. 2) divide; split. verb 1) stick fast to. 2) become strongly involved with or emotionally attached to. " Old English Compact Oxford English Dictionary There seems to be a movement to promote the verse form at Wordpress. The 3 poems are written with meter, rhyme and number of lines at the poet's discretion. The one requirement is to create side by side poems that can be merged into one poem. One of the best examples of this form that I have found is Miracle on the Hudson by Dave Schneider at Writing.com. Here is my poor attempt. cleave, an oxymoron one can split, one can cling divide in half, make a merge the axe sharp, the body soft fuel for war, hug of peace one is two , two are whole ~~Judi Van Gorder Faceted Diamond is a verse form that is probably as complicated to read as to write. It is an invented form found at Poetry Base and was invented by American poet Cory S Sylvester. Like the Cleave and the Trigee there are 3 poems in 1 but unlike the others, the reader may need clues to understand how to read the 3. The elements of the Faceted Diamond are: 3 poems in 15 lines. syllabic, 1-2-3-4-5-6--7-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. The even # lines break half way. (Poetry Base suggests the poem could be longer as long as it is an odd number of lines, but I am not going there. A second poem can be read by reading the odd numbered lines and the first half of the even numbered lines and .... A third poem can be read by reading the odd numbered lines and the second half of the even numbered lines. All 3 poems should make sense. Trigee poems can be found on the internet but the description of the genre came from a forum member who encountered it on another poetry forum. It appears to be the same as the Cleave, a nonce verse in which side by side poems merge into one poem. Alliterative Acrostic Trigee takes the concept of 3 poems in 1 to another level. It was presented as a challenge on a poetry forum. A three in one poem (Trigee), alliterated and the first letter of each line spells a word. Number of lines, meter and rhyme at the discretion of the poet.     Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms The Villonnet is another hybrid form created by D. Allen Jenkins and found at Shadow Poetry. This is a recent invented form which is designed to be a cross between a Villanelle and Sonnet. The elements of the Villonnet are: a poem in 15 lines, made up of 3 quatrains followed by a tercet. metric, iambic pentameter. rhymed, either keeping the 2 rhymes of the Villanelle or eliminating the second rhyme of the Villanelle and rhyming only the anterior lines of the stanzas. The following are some invented forms that fall under the genre that I call "borrowed" poetry. When borrowing other's work, be sure to credit the original Cento Verse Latin for patchwork, Verse made up of a medley of lines from the work or works of some well known poet. Verse in this genre dates back to ancient Rome. We Hold These Truths by Judi Van Gorder Cento by Jan Haag Chance Poetry is verse using "chance methods" like opening a dictionary or any book, close your eyes and put your finger on the page, using the words selected at random for the basis of the poem or drawing words at random from prewritten cards then using those words in the order drawn for the poem's vocabulary. American poets Jackson MacLow and John Cage have been forerunners in this avant garde poetic genre. Any chance method to select the words will do. The Assasination by Donald Justice (1925-2004) (Justice wrote words on cards and drew them randomly to compose this poem.) It begins again, the nocturnal pulse. It courses through the cables laid for it. It mounts to the chandeliers and beats there, hotly. We are too close. Too late, we would move back. We are involved with the surge. Now it bursts. Now it has been announced. Now it is being soaked up by newspapers. Now it is running through the streets. The crowd has it. The woman selling carnations And the man in the straw hat stand with it in their shoes. Here is the red marquee it sheltered under. Here is the ballroom, here The sadly various orchestra led By a single gesture. My arms open. It enters. Look, we are dancing. Dada is a movement beyond verse, it included all artistic endeavors. Initiated in Zurich in 1916 by 2 Romanians, it grew throughout Europe and finally across the ocean to the US. It is rebellion against the established norm. As a verse form, dada is basically taking random words and in the sequence of receipt relating those words as your poem. In my opinion it is much like a "found poem" but with a bit less thought and craft. Basically the instruction in the NPEOPP for writing dada verse is: Take a newspaper article and cut it up and put it in a bag. Then draw the words blindly one by one from the bag. Arrange those words in the sequence they are drawn onto a page to create your poem. "copy conscientiously / the poem will resemble you." It seems to be a collage of words and phrases outside the control of the poet. Erasure Verse is a poem made up of the leftovers after words from a written piece, prose or verse, have been erased. The following is an Erasure poem, made from words leftover from taking an erasure to the description below on the Found Poem. erasure by Judi Van Gorder gathering the environment a snatch Printed collage arrangement to create different things anything poet's larger words. The Flarf is a genre of verse that I am still trying to wrap my brain around. It is an internet dependant form that combines unusual phrases from google searches. Flarfs have been published in Magazines and Anthologies and seem to me to be pretty much nonsense poems but they are an increasingly popular if not contraversial form. My understanding is that the poet snatches phrases from incongruous word searches on google. It has even extended beyond google to searches on twitter, Facebook and other internet driven entities. Try searching for engine and clown together and see what google comes up with. Then snatch phrases from the various sites. This borrowed word form is the brain child of Gary Sullivan who said "I found the word flarf online on a police blotter where some stoner had described marijuana as flarfy," and subsequently came up with the concept to join incongruous words in a google search and then snatch phrases from the results and called it Flarfing. The poem is meant to be edgy, un PC, expose the aweful and in general be unsettling. A Found Poem is the gathering and assembling of grouped words "found" in the environment and incorporating the "found" phrases and words into a larger poetic piece. It is a "snatch of poetry" NPOPP. Printed images or phrases assembled in a literary collage. The lineal arrangement rearranges the phrases to create an entirely different piece. It presents things found in the poet's surroundings such as a news article, a poem, letters, dialogue or anything. The poetry is much larger than the "found lines" that intersperse the poet's words. It was recognized in the 20th century and one of the more prominent series of Found poems is Ezra Pound's Cantos which includes "real" letters between Jefferson and Adams, Papal documents, poems by Cavalcanti, government and bank documents. The form is strophic without prescribed structure. The following is a found poem using snippets of a posted conversation of members of a poetic community. found poetry by Rex Allen Brewer trying history the Dolores River northwest into the valley Lost Canyon road further if you take the highway curious to know who named the river before the padres Escalanté and Dominguez The River of Sorrows a small river one you can get to know Golden Shovel was introduced by award winning American poet, Terrance Hayes. The form is named for the first poem he wrote using the technique which changes a line of an existing poem to the end words of a new poem. Simply choose a line of poetry from any poem previously written. Use each word of that line in sequence as the end word of the new poem. If you choose a five word line, your poem will be 5 lines long. It’s Cold Out There The frigid winter nights, comforting to some conjure dreams of home and other things. I watch as weather changes, varied are impediments to travel, rain, snow, and never warm even when the sky is clear. ~~ Judi Van Gorder “Some things are never clear.” L1 Voice Ways by Robert Frost Spoem or Spoemetry is verse made from the subject lines of spam e-mail messages. The originator is speculative, since many writers and bloggers have claimed to be responsible. The form seems to have first shown up in 1999 and has been the theme of poetry contests, blogs and journals. A book entitled 'Spam: E-mail Inspired Poems' by Ben Myers was published in 2008 by Blackheath Books Myers claims to have been writing spam poems since 1999. The key is to find the unexpected.     Jeffrey's Sonnet

    Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart Jeffrey's Sonnet is a recent verse form invented by Scott J Alcorn. My guess is either the middle intital "J." in Scott J. Alcorn stands for Jeffrey, or this sonnet frame is named for the title or subject of a poem written by Alcorn. It appears the form varies from the metric pattern of most sonnets and has a unique rhyme scheme. The elements of the Jeffrey's Sonnet are: a quatorzain, made up of 2 sestets followed by a couplet. syllabic, 8 syllables per line. rhymed, rhyme scheme aabccb ddeffe ge .     Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms The Xenolith is an invented form created only this last month, September 2011. Technically to be a recognized verse form there should be several poems written using the same frame otherwise it is simply a nonce form. But because Carol Ward, the inventor of this particular frame, at Random Thoughts named it beginning with X (there are no other forms beginning with X) and I enjoyed reading how and why it was named and created, I had to include it here as a full-fledged invented form. Maybe someone else will give it a try someday and make it official. Xenolith is a rock formation of an older rock inside a newer rock, I liked that the poet chose this term not just for the unique X word but she conceptualized the definition to a poem within a poem. My mind is swirling trying to visualize an older poem inside a new poem captured within this unique frame. The frame could be a challenge with the irregular syllabic pattern in 15 lines, 7 of which are turned on only 1 rhyme. The elements of the Xenolith are: a 15 line poem. syllabic, L1,L3,L5,L8,L11,L13 & L15 are 12 syllables each, L2,L4,L6,L7,L9,L10,L12 &L14 are 8 syllables each. turned on 5 rhymes, rhymed a b a b a c c a d d a e a e a.     Explore the Craft of Writing Light Verse In the Mad Cow, the rhyme scheme sets the tone. This pastoral verse form invented by American Sebastian "Duke" Delorange, found at Poetry Base, is a perfect candidate for "Light Verse". The elements of the Mad Cow are: is a poem in 35 lines made up of 7 cinquains? metric, alexandrine lines, iambic hexameter (6 metric feet) lines with midline caesura. rhymed, rhyme scheme ababc cdede fgfgh hijij klklm mnono eieio. (for those not familiar with the nursery rhyme, "Old Mac Donald had a farm e i e i o. And on that farm he had a cow e i e i o. With a moo moo here and a moo moo there. Here a moo, there a moo, e i e i o0" pastoral, to go along with it's name, the poem should include an idylic country setting. The Mad Calf is just a baby Mad Cow, also invented by Delorange at Poetry Base, this verse form is a simpler shorter version of its parent. The elements of the Mad Calf are: a poem in 20 lines made up of 4 cinquains. syllabic, each line 6 syllables. rhyme, rhyme scheme abcde fghij klmno eieio. which in reality would be xxxxe xxxix xxxxo eieio, x being unrhymed. pastoral.

    Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms Margeda is an invented verse form that is an exercise in trochaic meter with head and tail rhyme. It is said to be adaptable to the "elfin, the grotesque, the ironic and to nature poems". ("nature poems" added at the end made me laugh) It is attributed to Edith Thompson and found in Pathways for a Poet by Viola Berg. I have also run into this form at various sites on the internet. The elements of the Margeda are: a quatorzain made up of 7 couplets that do not claim to be a sonnet. metered, written in trochaic tetrameter, the last foot is catalectic (drops the last unstressed syllable) Su/Su/Su/S. rhymed, the lines have both head and tail rhyme in rhyming couplets. a…b a…b c…d c…d e…f e…f g…h g….h i…j i…j k…l k…l m…n m…n

Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms Vole Central is the web site of UK educator and poet, Bob Newman where knowledge, skilled writing and humor are the perfect balance to deliver inspiration and a "how to" to countless students of poetry such as myself. Certainly Newman covers the basics of verse but he also has some unique and challenging forms which are exclusively on his web site. Some of the more intriguing are now also on this page. The Balanced Sonnet is noted as not a sonnet because it doesn't use the octave-sestet sonnet pattern but then technically neither does the Shakespearean sonnet. So as long as the poem sings in 14 lines with a pivot or turn somewhere within, I think one could call it a sonnet. This form was created by Barbara Dilworth. The elements of the Balanced Sonnet are: a quatorzain, made up of 2 California Rhyme Stanzas.. metered, iambic pentameter. rhymed, rhyme scheme ababcbc dedefdf. no placement of pivot prescribed. The Bina is an invented verse form created by Bob Newman at the Poetry By Way and found on the internet at his site and at Poetry Base . The Bina is a shortened variation of the Sestina. The elements of the Bina are: a pentastich. A poem in 5 lines. metered, predominantly iambic pentameter(or close). Lines are equal length. composed with end words limited to 2 words that are repeated in numerical sequence and one of the words appears internally in L5. Words 1-2-2-1-2 with word 1 appearing midway in L5 L1 ends with word #1 L2 ends with word #2 L3 ends with word #2 L4 ends with word #1 L5 midway word #1, ends with word #2. Here is an example of a poem written using the Bina frame and following two thematic poetic genres, Aubaude and Serenade. "Ades" Stiilis Bina(2 love poems for Joe D.) by DC Martinson Aubade Cleaving half the horizon, the morning sun cuts across the eyelid of the earth, and in a forever-moment the earth is outside of now: not dawn, not morning. Yet I'd crave You, my morning; You, my earth. Serenade Shuttering up the horizon, the night throes – heavy blanket on the face of earth, regardless of the weather on the earth. Yet shroud me with Your fibrous self this night and I'd succumb: You, my night; You, my earth. The California Rhymed Stanza is a septet used in the Balanced Sonnet but could be used as a stand alone poem or be written in any number of stanzas. It was created by Barbara Dilworth and introduced at Vol Central. The elements of the California Rhymed Stanza are: stanzaic, written in any number of septets, 7 line stanzas. metered or not at the discretion of the poet. (When used in a sonnet, in deference to the sonnet form, iambic pentameter would be my choice.) rhymed, scheme ababcbc. Decrina is a longer version of the Sestina attributed to Bob Neuman but I couldn't find it at his website Poetry By Way. I did find it at Poetry Base however. Having written a Sestina, I can't imagine why anyone would even consider attempting a longer version of the form. The elements of the Decrina are: stanzaic, ten 10 line stanzas with a 5 line envoy, a total of 105 lines. metered, lines of equal length, like the Sestina, iambic pentameter or iambic tetrameter. repeated end words in a specific pattern. (Numbers represent words) 0123456789 1357902468 3704815926 7419630852 4938271605 9876543210 8642097531 6295184073 2580369147 5061728394 I can only assume the envoy is like the Sestina with even #ed words midline and odd #ed words as end words. 0-9,8-7,6-5,4-3,2-1 Domino Rhyme is a very clever innovation of Bob Newman which can be found at his site as well as many others on the internet. Much like a slinky, rhymes tumble from stanza to stanza, it is something he calls "remote rhyming". The elements of the Domino Rhyme are: stanzaic, written in any number of quatrains. metered, written in a loose tetrameter. Lines should be same length. rhymed. L2 and L3 of the first stanza rhyme with L1 and L4 of the next stanza and so on down until the last stanza when L2 and L3 rhyme with L1 and L4 of the first stanza. abcd befc eghf gijh ... iadj. The Fifty Dollar Tomato by Judi Van Gorder The puSlogh vagh is a little something for the Star Trek fan. This stanzaic form, according to Bob Newman is a Klingon form. Apparently the Klingon language has only 5 vowel sounds. To preserve the Klingon spirit of the verse one should only use the short vowel sounds of a e i o u as in bag-beg-big-bog and bug. It is important to go by sound not spelling. You really should read Newman's description of the form for which I provide this link, Vol Central. I add no new insight, I am just passing on what I read there. The elements of the puSlogh vagh are: stanzaic, written in any number of cinquains. However until you speak Klingon fluently I recommend you stick with just one cinquain. isosyllabic, same number of syllables per line. The number of syllables is determined by the first line, it can be as few as 4 and as many as 10. composed with at least 2 "strongholds" within each line. The strong hold position is determined by the poet and established in the first line. A stronghold is specific syllabic positions for a repeated sound. In this case assonant rhyme. In other words, the vowel sound could be in the 3rd syllable of each line and 6th syllable of each line, or the 1st, 4th syllable and 6th syllable of each line. It could even be the 1st and 4th syllables with no end rhyme. etc.. written with a different key vowel in each line, the order of which is at the discretion of the poet. The vowel sound can be repeated once, twice or even more depending on the length of the line and inventiveness of the poet, but it must be repeated at least once in the strong hold position in each line. Here is an example, not great poetry but I'm just learning Klingon, so please forgive me. The strong hold is in the 3rd and 6th position of each line. The Hat and the Cat by Judi Van Gorder my cat smacked the straw hat then he saw the brown dog playing fetch with a net which he won having fun its no sin to win quick. The Scupham Sonnet is noted at Vol Central as not a "proper" sonnet, probably because of the lack of prescribed pivot. It was created by British poet Peter Scupham and uses the Scupham Stanza. The elements of the Scupham Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 2 Schupham stanzas (sixains) followed by a rhymed couplet. metered, iambic pentameter. rhymed, scheme abccba deffed gg. no prescribed place for a pivot but most good poetry naturally has a pivot or turn someplace within the poem. The Scupham Stanza is a sixain used in the Scupham Sonnet but which could be stand-alone poem or written in any number. It was created by British poet, Peter Scupham and is found at Vol Central. The elements of the Scupham stanza are: stanzaic, written in any number of sixains. metered or not at the discretion of the poet. The Triquain, found in Berg's Pathways for the Poet 1977 appears to be an attempt at combining the haiku and Crapsey cinquain. It was created by L. Stanley Cheney and referred to in both the Caulkins' Handbook and Pathways. This form comes a little closer to the purpose of haiku than some other haiku wannabees. There is another invented form also called a Triquain that appeared on the internet about 25 years later written in a syllabic heptastich. I suppose all verse involves mathematics in the measure of the line and length of the stanza, but there are a few verse forms that were invented specifically from mathematical concepts. Cadae was found in two forms. The word "cadae" is the alphabetical equivalent of the first five digits of Pi, 3.1415. (I never did understand Pi, how did I survive algebra?) But for you mathematicians, this may be a verse form you could have fun with. Both forms are similar in concept with the Fibonacci. The Cadae #1 -I found this form at a site for teachers, the form is a way of introducing the numbers of Pi to children. This verse form uses the first 5 digits of Pi to determine the number of lines in a strophe and the numbers of syllables in the line. The elements of the Cadae #1 are: strophic, written in 5 strophes of fixed but varied length. Variable: For a Cadae on steroids, the poet could take this a step further and in addition to the strophe, line and syllable count, the number of letters in the words of the poem could also follow the sequential numbers of Pi. The following is a "pumped up" Cadae and employs all of the above features. This poem includes 40 words with the letters in sync with the first 40 digits of Pi=3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197. As long as the strophe, line, syllable and letter count are in sync with the digits of Pi, the word count could vary from poem to poem. Based on the Fibonacci concept of the sequential numbers 0-1-1-2-3-5-8, It is a hexastich with progressive syllable count and has become very popular on the internet.
