Hunter in Training

IMG_0067.jpgHunter in Training

A tiny tabby kitten,
striped grey and black with green eyes
looked up from deep inside a brown cardboard box
and made a small sound,
a squeak and a meow.
So meek and sweet, who knew?

Too soon she showed true colors,
with a flying leap
she climbed my body,
up my back to my shoulder
to attack my ear.
So meek and sweet, who knew?

Seemingly asleep
her half closed eyes scan the room
alert to any movement.
Her casual stance
leisurely slides into a predator's crouch.
So meek and sweet, who knew?

Quick as a lizard
she twists and she summersaults,
then springs to tackle
my moving ankles
or to capture a black fly.
So meek and sweet, who knew?

Needle teeth chomp down
on unsuspecting body parts, drawing blood,
razor claws cling
to fabric or skin,
whatever she climbs.
So meek and sweet, who knew?

Then there are those still moments,
her soft warm body
curls into the hollow of my neck and purrs,
her comic antics
designed to ensnare my heart.
So meek and sweet, who knew?

A cat attack -- never a good thing. ? Even so, this is a lovely application of repetition and the form. Thanks for including the photo. I always love when poets include supplemental art.
