Diaspora

From one who never thought to leave my home,
the plight of refugees who flee their own
is hard to comprehend, their need to roam.

To leave their loved ones for a land unknown
where others speak a different language and
the competition favors those home grown,

With violence and poverty at hand
to stay and fight the tyranny for some
has come to mind.  I try to understand.

Their hope and desperation strike me dumb.
To risk their children's lives to journey forth,
says all I need to know, doubts overcome.

We must shelter neighbors fleeing north,
a quandary of coin versus human worth.
