Necessity

Cardinals come to feast
but never to drink, never to bathe.
The neighbor's dog barks
at an inflatable pool that has no pump.
Unbroken gladiolus rise
singularly in sad pots.
Radish, chard, tomato, and carrot peek
from unprepared ground.
Figures on a narrow porch doze
in a dappled sunset.

An unheeded lawn still needs to be cut.

Enjoyed this marti. The not happening feels all so real. I like a doze myself😀, but the lawn always looks its best when cut.

Phil, lawns always look good so long as someone else is cutting them! 🤣

Marti, I'll return to read with care and comment meaningfully. I just couldn't resist replying to Phil.

I did that today. Part of my REAL life "not happenings" seeped into this.

Marti, I like the scene. I like that like me, no one cares to waste time cutting that grass. Nodding off on the porch with a cold one is where it's at for me!

Tony

Oh, and also, I'm still cracking up about this:

I was trying to infer that the pool was not an elegant, in-ground, water-falled "cement pond", but just the kind that can be taken down each season and put back up.

I cut the lawn the day after I posted this. 😛

I enjoyed this dcmarti1.

These lines caught my attention

"but never to drink, never to bathe.
The neighbor's dog barks"

The alliteration but, bathe and barks stood out in my ear and caught my attention. But there are many more. It got me reading through the end.

All I can picture is the dog standing there barking at it. Too funny! 🤣

You're a better man than I am, Marti!

Perhaps I could become your gardener if I ever get back East. ;)

Indeed a lovely well done scene as if looking through a window (Possibly mine? Think we're getting a citation for my unmowed front lawn-sigh) A fine fine piece.

TY Marti!

Thank you for commenting and reading. I am in an imagist mode, I guess. 😉

Keep safe. See you on the twitterz!

Yes, definitely imagist in its tone and movement.  Like Joel, I like the alliteration occurring here and there.  Not going to reveal my grass-cutting proclivities!  Good to see you are back in the swing of writing, Marti!

Oh, I feel tired and discouraged just reading this! So I believe you've done the job you set out to do. 🙂

I imagine many Texan homes have inflatable pools this time of year.  They are everywhere in So Cal.  If you don’t have an in ground pool you have to at least have an above ground one.  Anything to get relief from the heat.  I can picture this so clearly. As usual your words are so relatable.
