Desolation

I once swung open,
my hinges pliable,
my panes clear,
paint fresh,
and comfort and laughter
waited on the other side.

Now on the edge of humanity,
closed,
hinges frozen,

panes crusted with dirt,
weathered by neglect and time,
devoid of promise,
I stand alone.

Judi, desolation is a central theme in my poems, so naturally this caught my eye. What I love about this is that without the accompanying picture, the poem could easily be a metaphor for the speaker. Very nice poem/presentation.

Thanks Tony,  This isn't the photo that inspired the poem but it is as similar as I could find.  This photo has the door attached to a building and looks a little rickedy.   I couldn't get the original photo to copy. The original photo is a door solidly framed  in what appears to be stone, with no building attached.  The door is of heavy wood and there are dirty window panes in the upper half so you can't see through but you can walk around it to the other side.  I wish I could reproduce it.  It stands alone.

You paint a clear picture of this door--a nice metaphor for broader themes of habitation/engagement vs. disuse/disengagement. Too bad you weren't able to reproduce the original photo with the door with windows, but it's interesting to consider how "panes" evokes "pains" and the twist that this interpretation could give to your lines.

Muchly enjoyed this Judi. Old doors are evocative, and there are human parallels, in being of use and no longer of being of use to anyone. Neglected and alone, devoid of promise.

A painting I did last year of a door:

Judi,

Made me remember the way I felt the first time, as a child, when I encountered the Island of Misfit Toys: desolation.

Thanks (I Think!),
