Tinker
Explore the Craft of Writing PoetryThe SonnetSonnet Comparison ChartThe Envelope Sonnet is all about the rhyme scheme, envelope rhyme being at the core. I have found a few variations which I think are relatively new invented sonnet forms. It seems the variations can't agree on just how that envelope rhyme should be placed. The envelope sonnet found at Poetry Base and in Lewis Turco's Book of Forms, appears to be a variation of the Petrarchan Sonnet. It has a slightly skewed rhyme scheme allowing 2 more rhymes than its predecessor which by the way also uses envelope rhyme. The elements of the envelope sonnet found at Poetry Base are: an octave made up of 2 quatrains followed by a sestet. metered, iambic pentameter. rhymed. Rhyme scheme abbacddc efgefg or abbacddc efefef. composed with a pivot after L8. The envelope sonnet found at Poet's Garret suggests an Italian or French origin; I'm leaning toward the French because of the linking rhyme. And since the form is syllabic which is also a common feature of French forms I would tend to agree. But I could find no examples other than current ones on that site. The elements of the envelope sonnet at Poet's Garret are: syllabic, octasyllabic or decasyllabic. composed of a sestet followed by a couplet and completed with a sestet. rhymed. Rhyme scheme abccba dd efggfe. composed with undefined pivot placement. An envelope sonnet that I created before I started researching verse forms and therefore naively called it an envelope sonnet unaware there were other forms also so named. Turned on only 4 rhymes, I use envelope rhyme but also envelope stanzas which in my humble opinion, trumps the other 2 variations. The elements of the envelope sonnet that I created are: metered, iambic pentameter. composed of a tercet followed by 2 quatrains and ending with a tercet. rhymed. Rhyme scheme aba cddc dccd bab. composed with pivot placed at poet's discretion. The Path by Judi Van Gorder Discordant storms erupt. The path goes dark while whipping wind and smashing rain complain and push the day to night, the blackness stark. The force of creation collects its cost and all the universe joins the cyclical flow while plunged in gloom there rants an unseen show. The earth is purged, the putrid air is washed. From recalled shadows cast above and below disjointed thoughts intrude and wander lost. Perception stumbles, blinded, spun and tossed and latent dreams turn labored, gray and low. In darkness chaos tricks the shaded brain that strains to see the dawn of nature’s spark to illuminate the straightened path's domain. ~~ © ~~ Poems by Judi Van Gorder ~~ For permission to use this work you can write to Tinker1111@icloud.com
