A Mother's Plea

I did not puke all those mornings,

And carry you so carefully during

Gestation with my willing sacrifice

To bring you gift of life from womb

To adulthood my lovely caring son,

For you to die for simply nothing

And no one who cares for you

At all as I do, in that far off land:

A bunch of bare and useless sand.

For this I did not worry myself to

Death while you rode on your bike,

And took those risks I did not like.

Enough now of this army life for you

My son only live return will ever do.

You do not fit a bloody HM body bag

I would hate a coffin draped in any flag.

A poignant piece from a mother's perspective Frank. I especially like this part:

For this I did not worry myself to

Death while you rode on your bike,

And took those risks I did not like

... and the ending couplet is quite a clincher:
You do not fit a bloody HM body bag

I would hate a coffin draped in any flag.

I would characterize this as a sonnet. Well composed.

Experimenting on answering. Quite a powerful piece Frank- Clear voice, clear images- and a well deserved anger from a mother's POV- well done Frank!

Hi Frank,

From the womb to the coffin is a journey that no mother wants to witness her child take. You bring out the poignancy of this and give it a resonance in the recent deaths of British soldiers in Afghanistan:

Enough now of this army life for you

My son only live return will ever do.

You do not fit a bloody HM body bag

I would hate a coffin draped in any flag.

Thank you for this thought-provoking read.
