Sacrifice

All those hushed voices

once strident and full throated

back into the nothing where-we

all came from

Do you remember

the mud the cracking of red-clay

the stream we crossed over

crossed over

into the battle for sense

and suffering and the chance

to choose or like learning to walk

you forgot the feel of lightning

warmed loam the impulse to-be

solid and growing to bud and bloom

to reach for the Sun to represent Earth

before the multitude of Heaven

And would we have done it

knowing the cost

of our Radical Liberation

would beget this sacrifice

and infinite responsibility.

Free will and responsibility -- the two must remain inseparable once one discovers he is human. The poem has a pleasing pace -- I noticed the effect of the hyphens right away -- and it leaves the reader to ponder: "Would we have done it?" when ignorance is bliss. Well presented, Dr. Con.

This is something what I should back on it for a few times, to absorb it good as your poem asks from the reader.

But I do feel the sense of the poem.

Hello DC,

It's weird how when I tried to back pace to add a word my whole review disappeared into ether!

I quite forgot what I said in my first review but here's another try. I like how you link descriptions of the terre firma with the more transcendental dimension. As Tony notes, the questioning invites the reader in and we ponder on the correspondence between freedom and responsibility, which although quintessential, is sadly wanting in our exercise of this basic right.

Perhaps this is not really your intent but I enjoyed thinking about the possible links and allusions here.
