Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice

Put on your animal masks and horns

into the woods to find the Mulberry

Tree the center of the World where

the Sun has been hidden

Abstractionists won't notice under

their eternal lights hidden in concrete

and steel caves plush with running

water and sixty-hertz Oms

But here beneath the shadows of trees

the darkness of wet and the chatter

of Children waiting for Magic to happen

the truth is apparent inside and out

must be aligned Nothing is real except

what is left when your bones are dust

orbiting whatever is left after The Great

Impulse finally rests leaving us here

on the Longest of Nights

singing drumming and calling

to ease our Terror and Love

with the promise of Light.

DC - I liked this muchly and replied to it already on PC. You know how spiritual I am not but this touched a spark in me. I so enjoyed this work of yours not that I don't others just this timely one's vibes resonated, appealed to my pagan sympathies perhaps though I am firmly one of your cave dwellers and despite max appreciation of nature no tree-hugger. I empathised with your evocation of the contrasts between the concrete jungle and the real one. I cannot make it to Stonehenge but which I could share the druids legal high (I have never smoked). neat play of abstract/concrete

Nothing is real except

what is left when your bones are dust

A viewpoint, but the illusions of now - or at least this glass of wine in my hand is having some 'real' affect!

cheers

Thanks Badge and Frank!

Frank happy yule to you too, and I am an absractionist most of the time;-)

Of course, Badge the non-dualists would simply say that in now there are no illusions and its only the effect through time that we 'know' so enjoy the glass of wine! ;-)

Many Thanks!

You do recall that where you and I come from they did the equivalent of trick-and-treat while dragging the (yule?) log to be burned at Midnight.

Truly, I enjoyed this stream of consciousness except for those fakey personae w/ upper case first letters. Man, this is the 21st century.

The poem exhibits a timelessness. I like the past/present contrasts that surface here and there. For instance, the first verse references traditions that may have carried over from the past, while the setting in the second verse seems to epitomize the same traditions albeit in the present day. I like the blend of astronomical reality and mystical concepts that, taken together, make up the Winter Solstice.

Hi Dr_Con,

I've read it several times. I can't pretend that I understand everything in the poem but I feel however you write, concrete or abstract, your poems always unfold a train of thoughts. I love the first stanza, which is concrete, easy to draw the reader in. I pause at stanza two, I'm still not quite sure what sixty-hertz Oms means even though I googled om which represents triads in Hinduism & Buddhism. I also like the pair of words or phrases you used, either in contrast or parallel as hilighted below.

These are just a few observations from me. Your poem is always intense to read.

Your poem is always intense to read.

And I would add always a challenge to read one of yours. I got that feeling while reading all your shared work and also while reading your wonderful book of poetry.

Dr.Con, this poem is rich with wonderful wise expressions as following:

Abstractionists won't notice under

their eternal lights hidden in concrete

Wonderful connected poem. I love it.

Thank you for sharing and happy holidays.

Thank You Aleks, Tony, Lake and waxwings for your kind words!

Lake its a play on OM and Ohm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohm and 60 Hertz is the North American standard so the ambient Om is the 60 Hz Ohm in the US ;-)

Waxwings- I have never been to Latvia BUT I grew up listening to stories of the Yule log and felt like I was there- Thanks for the resurfacing of long forgotten memories! ;-)

Many Thanks All! and special thanks Aleks for having the patience to indulge in my book- It is very gratifying :D

Much appreciation folks!
