Swap lines 3 and 4. I had to read poem four (4) times to finally enjoy the thought.

Where is line 4? Do you mean switching lines 2 and 3? If so, that makes sense.

I find it piercing, probably because of the word "ditch".

lay me face up in a ditch.

 

John, this is short, compact, beautiful. Good title and powerful lines.
