Ingerland

(written 45 mins. before England-Slovenia kick-off)

O Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Terry,

You came out here in such a hurry

To lay the world beneath your feet,

To show Olde Englande’s not effete

And lay aside all worry.

O Terry, Rooney, Lampard, Cole ,

You found yourselves inside a hole

With insolent colonial lungers,

Draw-seeking cheeky plungers,

Good God, well, Bless my Soul!

Not to worry, just dipping the toe,

You’ll have a go at the following foe,

Algeria? Don’t make me laugh. Hysteria!

You’ll get your feet and goals in gear

And show the world why you’re really here …

Oh dear. Oh God.

Of a sudden the newspapers are not nice

They liken you to a shower of mice

And it’s really not fair. Terry gets sent out there

To clear the air. Then it’s (why not?) pull the rug

Out from under. Blood and thunder!

O ye of little faith, we shall win,

And drop Slovenia in the bin!

We shall go on to the quarter, semi-finals

(and guide our fans to free urinals)

We shall never, never surrender!

Drown your sorrows in drink, by all means, but the real sorrows can swim

:@@ :) Dedalus, this World Cup brought lots of surprises, I think. You predicted well about this England-Slovenia match. But what are your predictions now? :) My first prediction was that Argentina would be the winner, but I failed :). Now, I predict that Spain will be the one this year :).

Anyway, your poem is right on track. The way how it is written and expressed gives me pleasure while reading it.

Thank you for sharing.

this poem was a joy to read brendan. the free urinals a laughing snippet. i remember being drunk at the local pubs i frequented in my local habitation drunk as a skunk worshipping urinals. i guess that part surprised me like my said mentioned above poem.

Brendan I can only now approach this one after a period of profound grieving for the errant soles of English national football, you show what can be written in poetic form in terms of subject matter wide-reaching and esoteric. From your angerland correspondent.

This really had me smiling as I read it. I love your passion for soccer! I wish I could find it. LOL I must say I really got a kick out of this.
