His final encounter one to one with a roadside bomb

was in all probability inevitable. He knew the odds.

Living to more or less extent deals differential hands

in the haphazard gambles implicit in our existence.

Few people participate in anything as deadly though

as the voluntary risk attendant upon bomb disposal.

 

One faulty move with explosives may be the very last,

like playing Russian roulette but driven to the task

by supreme sense of duty not devil-may-care daring

or careless regard for the rich preciousness of all life.

Such men as this must be driven by the exact antithesis,

a heightened personal evaluation of the vital spark

which inhabits humanity that they lay theirs on the line.
