"To my darling boy be of literature

the very welcome and willing guest

mark, learn it, and inwardly digest."

A message in hand-nibbed words

penned with slightly faded blue ink.

In the front of a second hand book

it gave me pause to have a further

think and take more than a second

look. Signature of the evident father

endorsed with a single kiss caused

me to wonder how such a personal

present had got abandoned like this.

The note inscribed from William to

his Tom raised the volume's impact

I pondered on a young son, owner

of that tome, a war that was to come

and if the Tom to whom it was given

ever made it safely home to a father.
