Cheerleaders at the Execution

Cheerleaders at the Execution

I have it on good authority

- but what if it were true?

That we don’t trust actors

they are true to themselves

See what you are supposed to see

buy what they want you to buy

eat what you are told is food

I have it on good authority

- but what if it were true?

That Cheney after Saddam’s Execution

went into the gallows shutting the door

a lonely hour a space made more empty

by the stubborn silence of an infamous corpse

The cameras remained off and we wonder

what necromantic shenanigans he got up to

Did he apologize for broken promises

or weep sodden tears offering regrets

for all those dead for what must be done

Or did he whoop and cheer until exhausted

he clutched his empty chest and slumped

on the floor next to his once faithful friend

mumbling ‘I beat you again and again’

I have it on good authority

- but what if it were true?

That Camus visits Bradley Manning

in his solitary hell makes him dinner

and gives him lessons on the Way

It’s not pretty but it is private

Mostly Camus talks about etiquette

and honor and how to hold a glass

so when you clink it echoes through

Boardrooms and their bunkered extensions

ringing fitfully even in the Greatest Silence

of Wal-Mart and sweatshops slaughterhouses

and Broken Dream alley’s where new one’s

are bought by the handful and all bird song

is mocking even there it rings soulfully

I have it on good authority

- but what if it were true?

I hear it now

do you?

OMG, that is beautiful...since it was only Camus that got me out of a three year depression with his Myth of Sisyphus.

You understand Monsieur Cheney very well.

This poem disturbs me, but I think it was supposed to. CONTENT wise, not form, I meant! Just wanted to clarify! ;)

Oh yes the content is meant to disturb, as the topics implied are by no means comfortable to most Americans. Glad yu enjoyed and found a little resonance;-) Many Thanks! DC & J

I love this polemic/rant whatever it is fair to describe your poem Doc. Do not have the right nous to get every nuance but get the passion and am with you railing against the bad guys whoever they are.

I studied Les Justes in French class great insight into assassination and motivation to try to right wrongs by those means usually a wrong of its own. Thanks for the read. Frank.

I grinned my way through this one ... I loved the Camus and Bradley Manning combo! L'etranger, indeed!

Drown your sorrows in drink, by all means, but the real sorrows can swim
