Wonder

Stumbling into the blatant face

of paeans and unreserved emotion,

he fast turns the corner, forced

to react to this new world, reasoning

awry, old habits unworkable while he

flails, touching down momentarily to test

the icy thinness, then quick away,

yawing desperately to find

familiar mores and aged tactics,

useless against his ignorance.

Fascinating line. And that "touching down" opens up the reader to many possibilities.....because, to me, this is not as straightforward as it may seem. Perhaps there is some subtlety, something else going on here? ;)

icy thinness

Spooky, and neat piece.

Thanks, Marti. Think generation gap, especially in writing, especially in poetry.

Thanks, Doc. Sort of an old fart rant, but what else does an old fart do? ;)

Hi Geoff. I don't do sodding, except metaphorically, so yes, sod the rest. Reminded of old military bar song that goes "Fuck 'em all..."

Yes, there's the plane metaphor, but could just as easily be a bird!

... touching down momentarily to test
the icy thinness, then quick away ...

The use of paeans made me picture a gracefully aged phoenix with a bit of life still left in him. Perhaps even a comeback.

Tony, you always get to the nitty-gritty, in an eloquent and unique way. Thank you.
