One Day In September

Something that could never be gainsaid

Is the towering courage of the Fire Brigade.

What fires their blood and chills ours

Is a reflex instinct to go to others’ aid

To go unnaturally towards fire,

To enter the arena of ultimate threat

And that heat which will naturally repel.

Fire fighters’ bravery is as Dover is to cliffs of chalk,

Deep in their fabric to go where lesser mortals balk.

The urge to escape is one the Brigade must quell

Thoughts of self preservation cannot be for them

Personal safety an instinct that duty bound they’ll stem.

Fire is a frightening natural power

That makes even a fierce wolf cower.

What heart it takes to face such force

With blood so cool and bold resource;

They full deserve this those who serve

The highest of public praise

For all their dutiful service.

And we always will remember them,

And shall always and ever talk,

Of one day in September when

They stood the tallest in New York.

A moving tribute, Frank. Some highlights --

What fires their blood and chills ours

Is a reflex instinct to go to others’ aid

To go unnaturally towards fire,

Fire is a frightening natural power

That makes even a fierce wolf cower,

and of course,

And we always will remember them,

And shall always and ever talk,

Of one day in September when

They stood the tallest in New York
.

I also like your use of the word gainsay in this poem.
