The Yellow Tulip

The Yellow Tulip

That tulip
Staring me right in the face
On a sinister bent stem
Half inquisitive
Half threatening
With a deep black centre
Sinking and plunging
Into places I don’t even
Want to know about

And that mean little yellow
Goat’s head shape
Inside
In the centre
Stirring up restlessness from
Deep within my soul

And all is silent in the room
The tulip and I
Both with dead-still heads
Both bending toward
Inevitable death

Silent in the room
Adorned with
Perishing petals

To receive love, you have to give it...

Douglas, you made me picture you in a funeral parlor or wake of an acquaintance and this tulip got you thinking while "all is silent in the room/The tulip and I".

Hi Douglas, thanks for this visit from Les Fleurs du Mal, with your own unique insight.

Some colourful words to set the reader's mind in motion. Your unusual use of the word "sinister" prompted me to think of a diagonal heraldic stripe. And with the "goats head shape/ inside/ at the centre"... I could almost imagine someone describing a family's fateful coat of arms. Enjoyed. G.
