Poetry Magnum Opus

Imago

Benjamin

Recommended Posts

A primitive aspect of life, is one

of minute larva, that is no more than

a mouth with digestive system attached.

And in its pupa, extra parts evolve:

until the final imago-- erupts

forth a voracious creature-- one with wings

whose only purpose is to eat and breed.

My ghoulish and outlandish metaphor

wonders: have humans reached their "imago"?

To stand at Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End"

where children "break out" with kinetic powers.

A whole new evolutionary state

to parody the old embodiments

of judgement days, compounded by the few.

Or perhaps the patient meek who'd like

their turn to wave a sword of righteousness

at abstract mists of vested interests:

aren't human after all; but creatures--

without human values or constraint

just waiting for our universe to self-

destruct in its own inequality.

Imago. Revision1

A primitive aspect of life: a mouth

with digestive system attached,

a pupa, wherein extra parts evolve

until, exceeding all constraint-- erupts

forth a voracious creature-- one with wings.

Whose only purpose is to eat and breed.

A whole new evolutionary state,

to parody the old embodiment

of judgement days compounded by the few.

And that perhaps the patient meek, who'd like

their turn to wave a sword of righteousness

at specious mists from vested interests,

aren't human after all; but creatures--

without human values or constraint,

just waiting for our universe to self-

destruct in its own inequality.

Have altered line 12 from "at abstract mists of vested interests".

Good, dear friend but you are engaged in a story and not really writing a poem.

Forgive me, as I do the same thing endlessly!

Cheers, Bren

Just a few bubbles of thought that helped to pass the time before they pop and disappear forever. Your very good health! Geoff

Forgive my lack of knowledge or poetry laws, but I think of all poetry as stories, even, or maybe especially, haiku. Perhaps most are poor stories, but so are most so-called poems--sorta like my own. Where did I put my pills?

Paco can't find his pills and now I think I will have to start! :)

But this was the most intriguing:

A whole new evolutionary state

to parody the old embodiments

Hmmm. Not rise above, not leave behind, not outgrow.....parody. That's just ruthless liberal talk! And I liked it.

There is very little 'abstract' or 'misty' about vested interests. They contribute most actively to the misery of the world, to its terms of aggression, to the premature murder of uniformed youth!

Sorry - just makes me angry. Not at you, of course.

Cheers, Bren

I appreciate the useful feedback and my thanks to you all for taking the time to comment.

The "abstract mists" phrase indicates a frustration that no one is ever held to account-- but then I read too much about "lack of clarity" re: bankers, political corruption, energy suppliers, FIFA and now sadly, organized charities. And it also makes me angry from a great distance, that the leader of the most powerful nation on earth is virtually neutered by those same forces. Democracy at work. Cheers, Geoff.
