Beaming God

I love hot chips and steaming cod,

gifts received from a beaming God,

who understands the workman’s needs.

all in a slice of silence.

It is almost too late for time to return,

before our hearts begin to burn

with the things we did,

the things we were encouraged to do:

Cold steel of the bayonet,

I think he was only 16.

Everything is only half-right,

nothing is ever completely clear;

everything is on-the-way, but not arrived:

I need another beer.

We fail,

but I’ll try again,

and fail better.

Look at me!

I make promises to shadows in the night,

ensconced in cheap rented rooms,

the man you once loved.

I think I can be better,

but there is no real confidence;

I look at the facts

and try to be cool and normal

as a thousand demons scream inside,

with the heat of the word “Betrayal”!

I do not know how longer I can go on,

I do not know, I do not know.

Drown your sorrows in drink, by all means, but the real sorrows can swim

Damn, that's deep. Another of the WW1 pieces? Thoughtful piece.
