Poetry Magnum Opus

the circus tent billows in the wind

The procession halts

in a fanfare of blazing trumpets,

a cough of rolling drums.

Sudden silence!

Let me introduce my friends:

step up and say hello!

Gene is acrobatic:

he scurries in and out of locked rooms,

but has never yet been caught.

Anne is temperamental,

which means what it says,

mental with a temper.

I shall chew the leafy drug,

remove but some of my clothes,

and sing the song of loneliness.

Outside there is the rain

which runs along the road.

My words are all in vain,

and stumble out in code.

Turn back time forever,

no longer let it run.

This, then, this endeavour,

halts. Here , then, it is done.

Drown your sorrows in drink, by all means, but the real sorrows can swim

Surreal reflections, that suggest the narrators limited existence is about to enter an emotional cul-de-sac. St 3 has a sardonic ring to it which abates with St 6 and "the song of loneliness". A candidate perhaps for: "The Interpretation Of Dreams".

I nearly fell of the couch:

Which means what it says,

mental with a temper.

But the last stanza has a sadness that I am not exactly sure how deep it goes:

Turn back time forever,

no longer let it run.

Geoff is right: surreal. I thought of the old TV show "The Prisoner".....

David W. Parsley

Wistful and wise cracking, at the same time. Agreed about that temperamental thing - comic brilliance!

Thanks Bren,

- Dave
