As Time Passes By

My sister Debi and her son Jonah

my nephew visited me today,

This made me so happy.

We talked up a storm.

She was going to bring me a pastry bread

that Jonah was selling for school

but she my sister left it at home.

She brought me McDonald’s

two McChicken sandwiches.

She has brought me some wine too.

Jonah had Chicken nuggets

The only food he eats

And my sister had a big ‘n’ tasty.

Geez I haven’t had wine in 3 years.

It was 500 milliliters or 3 servings size

which is 6 ounces of alcohol per serving.

I hadn’t drunken in ages.

It made me fall asleep

for two hours.

Next time my sister is bringing me

two of these containers.

That will be enough

to pass me out for hours.

The wine container only cost

3 dollars and 50 cents.

It was red wine.

My favorite red wine is Merlot.

Jonah asked me a strange question today.

He said to me “Why don’t you get up”?

He doesn’t understand paralysis yet I assume.

I told him to ask his mommy to tell him why.

I felt awkward that I broke my neck

and became paralyzed meaning I couldn’t walk.

He said never mind when I told him

to ask his mommy.

I also talked to my dad and mom

on the phone today.

I am getting high speed internet

for my birthday in March.

My mom is going to pay

the 20 dollars a month for the service,

This is so cool with me.

I use the dial up service now

and it is so slow.

Now I will have high speed internet service soon.

Instead of listening to baseball games on the net

I will be able to watch the baseball games on the net.

I am so happy about this. Yay!!!!

They have zoom town DSL two speeds.

The one megahertz speed a second

is 20 dollars a month.

The 4 megahertz speed a second

50 dollars a month.

What is cool about the DSL internet

is that I can make and receive phone calls

While being on the internet.

I also have an eye allergy

So I can’t see to well.

I typed this poem up in bold type

with bigger size text print

Well I hoped you enjoyed

the glimpse into my life.

I like all the detail, Victor. I think you portrayed something really well with this part:

Jonah asked me a strange question today.

He said to me “Why don’t you get up”?

He doesn’t understand paralysis yet I assume.

I told him to ask his mommy to tell him why.

I felt awkward that I broke my neck

and became paralyzed meaning I couldn’t walk.

He said never mind when I told him

to ask his mommy.

The true level of the child's lack of understanding is evident in his blase response.

Yes my dear friend Victor, this was a glimpse into your life. Sad and ironical nice...

I am glad that you have wine icon_smile.gif just don't take at once. Here we are used to drink more per servings icon_biggrin.png So it's ok, 500 milliliters is not much icon_wink.gif.

Anyway, back on the poem. It is interesting how you use the real events inside the poem. Thanks for sharing your words and your life time with us.

Larsen,

This is a very touching story, there's a homey feel to it. I can feel your happiness when you are with your family and with wine.

All the best,

thanks for commenting lake. made me smile when you added the wine part in response. my sister is bringing me two of those containers for thanksgiving. that will be one liter of wine. that much will knock me out for the whole day lol. seriously i think i will save one of the two containers for another day. it is only 3.50 for a 3 cup serving. when i used to live in my apartment i drank wine almost every night. yes im a wino. lol. 4 cups was my limit and usually i drank always less then 24 ounces. usually about 18 ounces was the most i usually drank a night. when is a taste that grows on you. i would eat cheese to counter the wines tastes.

Hello vic,

What comes across in your account is the warmth and love of your family - your sister and nephew who visited you with some treats and your parents with whom you keep in touch by phone and their special birthday gift for you.

As someone who struggles with 'dial-up' internet and the constant 'connection timed out' message on the screen, your excitement about the faster internet access touched a chord. Good Luck, my friend with this less frustrating interaction with the world.

Your nephew must be troubled by your condition even though he cannot understand it and his questioning you is a measure of his interest in you.

Warm and honest - thank you for sharing this.

hi goldenlangur,

this isn't the first time jonah has made a commnt about me not walking. he just is to young to comprehend. he once said to me when i asked his mommy my sister to do something for me. i asked her to get some hot water in my cup so i could make some instant hot tea and he said "go walk and do it yourself uncle michael."

thanks frank for commenting. Jonah was just being curious and exploitative at his age. he just turned five in july 19.4 months ago. he is a little slower than his cousin mason who turned six on September 26 2 months go. Jonah is really inquisitive. i think he has commented on my paralysis a few times. just don;t remember exactly what he said the little tike. lol

Hi vic,

You're right - your nephew is too young to understand. At his age kids seem to see things in black and white and cannot grasp what they themselves have not experienced.

How well you bring out this innocence in you account.

Do keep writing.
