Quasimodo

I'd never seen her fresh spring flowers

Nor felt lush grass between my toes

Yet sense a purpose in these hours

Where such vibrations are let loose

That resurrect a tower of Babel

Where sanctuary foils the rabble

Who shun all forms of empathy

In vicious words I cannot hear

Till innocence becomes a victim

Of lies and vain self interest

My curse remains a cruel jest

To those who ridicule the smitten

And I pour scorn from high above

For there is all I ever loved

Oh Geoff, I read your title and immediately pictured the poor twisted body of the famous character.  The images that follow paint the isolation and pain. This is beautifully written, read out loud it is like a symphony.  This sonnet in iambic tetrameter with rhyme abab ccxx deed ff  was truly a pleasure to read.

Thanks,  Tink

Glad you like it.  I thought it might make a small change from the daily diet of modern misery we all seem subject to at the moment. G.

I thoroughly enjoyed the musicality of the piece. The first line is inviting. I agree with Tink.

... and that it does. I find myself looking more and more for people with empathy and turning away from those whose negative vibe only serves to bring others down.

Not to quibble, but I scan one more rhyme than Judi: abab ccxa deed ff.  I wouldn't mention it, except that I have been experimenting with separated end rhymes and enjambment, lately.  So this kind of jumped out at me.  I like the sense of the thing missing in those around Quasimodo being the one non-rhyming end-word: empathy.
