When you're beaten
remember to breathe,

April 3  This is crazy, I learned after committing to 3 forums promoting a Poem a Day that two of the forums have "prompts" for each day.  So I'm writing not one poem a day but three.

Backyard Poet

He called himself
     a backyard poet,
and wrote of his pug playing
below a gnarled old oak
that housed chortling Kingbirds
and scampering squirrels.

This was his place
where hundreds of pages
    were filled
with his heart and his mind.

His place where friends
were welcomed for barbeque
    and he and Myrtle
would sit silently
to watch the sunset.

Then Katrina came to call,
    and his pen was silenced.
              ~~Judi Van Gorder

Prompt - "place"

Flight of the Mind

In sleep
we leave this world
and travel with our mind.
Creating images
of light and night
in dreams.
The flight
encounters fears
and tears and joys in kind,
engaging fantasy
and truth, all one
in dreams.

Prompt:  "dreams"

Hearth

Snug
comfort,
warm,
soothing
near the hearth.
Contained
fire
gives heat
to my bones
and calms chatter
of my limbs.
Slowly
with
purpose
unaware
of need
or
constant
care.

April 16

Waking

Last night's rain
has ended,
the fire has gone out
and the chill of the morning
sinks deep to my bones.
The hum of the fridge
interrupts the silence
joined by Molly's soft meows
begging for attention.
My day begins.

Inside Cat

It is sounds
almost as if she's weeping,
the squeaky little meows
of her plea
to be released
into the big out of doors.
Spring beckons,
but it can't be this morning,
and she doesn't understand.
She will be sequestered
one more day inside.
Tomorrow's freedom
will be her reward.
     ~~Judi Van Gorder

Prompt: weeping
