To Lose Weight

Stepping on the weighing scale

is a sanity check for me

this morning after my head overflowed

with sound bites, moving images

and snapshots of you.

I tried many self-help books

on losing weight, compared the risks

and gain. I agree it helps to have less

of you clogging my system,

that it takes time to lighten up,

to remove the weight of your arms

around my waist and love handles,

but I will do it without

looking damaged by the loss.

My new year's resolution:

Lose all of you this year.

this poem was really great to read! i love the analogy employed here - it is by turns, witty, scathing, sad and victorious...

enjoyed! thanks jj! icon_biggrin.png

Hello Joel. Interesting poem, and the subject so familiar :) .

What inspired you for this poem?

Much enjoyed.

I am actually doing weight training and wanted to use that as metaphor and vehicle for a poem. I finally did :-)

The metaphor works very well, and it's totally clear by the end of the poem, the New Year's resolution, that is. Even so, there is a hint of a double meaning throughout:

... my head overflowed

with sound bites, moving images

and snapshots of you

... your arms

around my waist ...

My new year's resolution:

Lose all of you this year.

The poem is concise and otherwise well-written.
