Ashes to Ashes

Ashes to Ashes

Ash contained in an urn,
142 pounds of flesh
reduced to almost weightless,
white and grey flakes.

Spread under a redwood
they will soon
fade into the earth
to nourish new growth.

Thrown into the air
they float on the breeze,
separated yet
one with the universe.

But her humanity lives on
in those who will remember.

There are people who keep them. It seems like too much of a responsibility to me, having to store the urn in a safe place, and always there is risk that something could happen to it. I think spreading the ashes is a dignified course of action.

You could be sent to a paper mill and be recycled into a book of poems, @tonyv

Deeply pesonal, but not sweetly sentimental. "Separated yet one". Nice.
