French Verse

Freie Verse, (French -vers libre) is rhymed metric lines of varying length used first in the 16th century, French Fables and commedies and Italian Madrigals. By the 18th century it found its way into German poetry but it is not to be confused with the German, Freie Rhythmen which is unrhymed. It may be the predecessor of the current Free Verse in which the line is the rule and meter and rhyme are uncommon.

The elements of Freie Verse are:

  1. metered, quantitative verse , iambic or trochaic lines of uneven length.
  2. rhymed, rhyme scheme at the discretion of the poet.

One Two Three, Ring! Judi Van Gorder

The goal was set last June
when in a loss they heard the tune
    of victory for other men.
    Defeated then.
    Through eighty two
    their mantra grew
    to send
    a message round the bend
that they would be the champs
they revved up all the amps.
Then playoffs tested heart and grit
and they proved up for it.
    Yes, it came true,
    L.A. Lakers gained their due!

Congratulations to the 2008-2009 LA Lakers on winning the NBA Championship! Go Lakers!
