Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart English Verse Bowlesian Sonnet or Australian Sonnet is attributed to English poet, William Lisle Bowles (1762 -1850) whose book of 14 sonnets published in 1789 was heralded for its "simple sincerity" and expression of thought through appreciation for life and nature. His works carried a tender tone and have been described as melodious.Although Bowles was English and probably never travelled to Australia, his sonnets did. The honesty and serenity of his poems struck a chord in what was then England's penal colony and the form was eventually adopted by the Aussies as their own. Poet's Garret tells this story better than I. The elements of the Bowlesian Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 3 quatrains and a couplet. rhymed abba cddc effe gg. metric, iambic pentameter composed with the pivot or volta between the 9th and 13th lines. On hearing the Bells at Sea by William Lisle Bowles 1789 ow sweet the tuneful bells' responsive peal! As when at opening dawn the fragrant breeze Touches the trembling sense of pale disease, So piercing to my heart their force I feel. And hark! with lessening cadence now they fall, And now along the white and level tide They fling their melancholy music wide; Bidding me many a tender thought recall Of summer days, and those delightful years When by my native streams, in life's fair prime, The mournful magic of their mingling chime First waked my wondering childhood into tears! A stanza is a thought unit in a specific number of lines surrounded by other thought units in a uniform pattern. (This could be an infinite number of combinations, such as 3 quatrains or 2 cinquains or a tercet, a couplet, a tercet, a couplet etc or as in the case of the 2 most popular sonnet forms, either a quatorzain made up of an octave followed by sestet or 3 quatrains followed by a couplet.) Remember these are thought units, however we often show the separation of these thought units with either a space on the page or with rhyme pattern such as ababcdcd which is an octave made up of 2 alternating rhymed quatrains, while abababab is simply an alternating rhymed octave and abab cdcd are 2 quatrains. Jose Rizal M Reyes of the Philippines took the Bowlesian Sonnet, changed the structure of the stanza pattern and called it the Canadian Sonnet. The elements of the Canadian Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 2 quatrains followed by 2 tercets metric, iambic pentameter rhymed, rhyme scheme abba cdcd eff egg pivot or volta L9 or after Today’s Best by Lawrence Eberhart The editor demands my very best with ocean’s depth and pictures for one’s mind. The pen is poised and pauses while I think – perhaps I scratch my beard and sip a drink, before returning, determined, to my task. Oh, hell!     Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart English Verse English poet, William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is credited with being the leader of the romance movement in England. He sometimes wrote his poems in a series focused on a period of history or cultural event, often in sonnets. His Ecclesiastic Sonnets which chronicle the schism between the Catholic Church and the Church of England are typical of his endeavors. Most of his sonnets were written in the Petrarchan or Italian Sonnet form. However, there is one sonnet in which he created his own rhyme scheme, the criteria of which ultimately became known as the Wordsworth Sonnet. It is a sonnet about sonnets and appears to be a variation of the Petrarchan frame, with a little different rhyme. But where the Petrarchan sonnet makes its turn from conflict to solution between the octave and the sestet, this sonnet seems to pivot in the very last line. From the second line on, it becomes a kind of Catalogue poem or Blason making its case for the acceptance of the sonnet form. The octave-sestet structure is evident in the rhyme scheme but in fact L8 is enjambed and there really is no separation of thought from octave to sestet. It is a list of reason after reason why the sonnet is well deserved and in the last line there is a change of tone from praise to grief because there are too few. The elements of the Wordsworth Sonnet are: a quatorzain. Looking at the rhyme scheme only, one could say the quatorzain is made up of an octave of 2 envelope quatrains, an alternating rhyme quatrain and a rhymed couplet in that order. metered, iambic pentameter. rhymed abbaacca dede ff. written as a Catalogue poem. it is composed with the pivot or volta in the very last line.     Redondilla Sonnet

It is named for the Redondilla because of the use of the Redondilla quatrain and I suppose it is called the Sardine because the rhyme scheme gives a packed feeling. The other names, I haven't a clue where they came from. The defining feature of this sonnet is the rhyme pattern and shortened meter. The elements of the Redondilla Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 2 Redondilla quatrains followed by an envelope sestet. syllabic, in keeping with the Redondilla, the lines are 8 syllables each. However the 8 syllables could also be interpreted as iambic tetrameter. rhymed, rhyme scheme either abba abba ccddcc or abba cddc eeffee.

    Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart Welsh Verse Features of the Welsh Meters Welsh Codified Divisions Cyhydedd Fer Sonnet probably didn't develop until long after the ancient Welsh Meters were codified. The first "sonnet" in Sicily did appear on the literary scene about the same time the Welsh Black Book of Carmarthen was written. However, the sonnet hadn't gained popularity and possibly even identity until a couple of centuries later with Francesco Petrarch's Love Sonnets to Laura. It is entirely possible, as Poet's Garret suggests, that a 7 couplet poem with pivot and resolution could have been composed in 6th century Wales, using the Cyhydedd Fer couplets but it is more probable that this is a recent innovation and not from Wales at all. This verse form seems to be a variation of the Couplet Sonnet using 8 syllable lines. The elements of the Cyhydedd Fer Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 7 couplets. syllabic, 8 syllable lines. rhymed, aabbccddeeffgg. composed with pivot between the 5th and 8th lines. This book was written for teachers with contributions by teachers. The various forms were offered as learning exercises. The Illini Sonnet uses iambic tetrameter as well as pentameter to complete the quatorzain. Inventd by Nel Modglin who probably is connected to the University of Illinois in some way since "Illini" is the nickname connected to the school. The elements of the Illini Sonnet are: a quatorzain. metered, iambic - L1,L4,L5,L8,L9 and L12 are tetrameter and L2,L3,L6,L7,L10,L11,L13 and L14 are pentameter. rhymed, a b c a b c d b c d e c e e. composed with a pivot L8 and closed with summary couplet. The LuVailean Sonnet alternates pentameter and dimeter lines and finishes with a heroic couplet. It inventd by Lyra LuVaile. The elements of the LuVailean Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 7 couplets. metered, iambic - 6 couplets of alternating pentameter and dimeter lines and ending with a heroic couplet (rhymed iambic pentameter). rhymed, rhyme scheme ababcdcdefefgg.

The Unrhymed Sonnet is not to be confused with the Blank Verse Sonnet which is also unrhymed but written in iambic pentameter where the "Unrhymed Sonnet" is not written in an iambic pattern. The elements of the Unrhymed Sonnet are: a quatorzain, broken or unbroken into stanzas at the poet's discretion. metered, although it does not carry an iambic pattern it is written in accentual verse with 5 stresses per line. unrhymed. composed with a pivot where it would appear most naturally. In My Dotage by Judi Van Gorder I often wondered if life held big things for me, by some standards it has. By mine it was just my life, events and surroundings met with choices. Choices, ah there is the key, the only thing I could control. But even then some were good some not so good and in the end they were all part of the journey. You've heard all of this before. Nothing so profound, just common sense, these ramblings of mine are no new revelation. Would I make changes if I could go back? My first thought is, of course… then I remember it would have changed my passage and I would miss what came after. Oh no, I wouldn't want to miss what came after. No, not a moment of it.

    Kyrielle Sonnet

According to Poet's Garret , this verse form has been around since the Middle Ages, 15th century. Like most French verse especially the Lai family of forms, it is syllabic and has a refrain. Unlike the narrative Kyrielle, as a sonnet the piece should be a lyrical meditation. The elements of the Kyrielle Sonnet are: a 14 line poem made up of 3 quatrains and a couplet in that order. syllabic, 8 syllables per line. rhymed, rhyme scheme AabB ccbB ddbB AB or AbaB cbcB dbdB AB. composed with a refrain in the last line of each stanza. L1 is repeated as L13 and L4 is repeated as L8, L12 and L14. composed with no prescribed pivot however those that I have read usually pivot between the 2nd and 3rd quatrains.     Heroic Sonnet

But, John Donne's The Token "sings" with the best of sonnets and convinced me this verse form easily qualifies. This longer sonnet form dates back to 16th century England. The elements of the Heroic Sonnet are: metric, iambic pentameter. a poem in 18 lines made up of 4 alternate rhymed quatrains and ending with a rhymed heroic couplet. rhymed, rhyme scheme ababcdcdefefghgh ii composed without designated arrival of the pivot, but the poem is summarized and concluded by the ending couplet. The Token by John Donne (1572-1631) Send me some token, that my hope may live, Or that my easeless thoughts may sleep and rest; Send me some honey to make sweet my hive, That in my passions I may hope the best. Send me nor this, nor that, to increase my store, But swear thou think'st 'I love thee,' and no more. *Note: The term "Heroic Sonnet" isn't exclusive to the verse form described above. 17th century English poet John Milton wrote a series of Petrarchan Sonnets which are referred to as his Heroic Sonnets not because of the structure but because they were sonnets praising past heroics. In this case the term Heroic Sonnet refers more to the theme of the sonnets than the verse form.     Shadow Sonnet

    Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry The Sonnet Sonnet Comparison Chart The Shadow Sonnet is a fairly recent invented form found at All Poetry.com and Shadow Poetry and was created by Amera M. Anderson. This sonnet uses homophonic word repetition at the start and finish of each line to create a shadow effect. The elements of the Shadow Sonnet are: metric, primarily iambic pentameter. It has also been described as decasyllabic which is the same length as iambic pentameter but gives a little wiggle room in placing the stressed and unstressed syllables. a quatorzain that may use the frame of any sonnet such as the Petrarchan, Shakespearean or Bowlesian. Explore the Craft of Writing Poetry Invented Forms Vole Central is the web site of UK educator and poet, Bob Newman where knowledge, skilled writing and humor are the perfect balance to deliver inspiration and a "how to" to countless students of poetry such as myself. Certainly Newman covers the basics of verse but he also has some unique and challenging forms which are exclusively on his web site. Some of the more intriguing are now also on this page. The Balanced Sonnet is noted as not a sonnet because it doesn't use the octave-sestet sonnet pattern but then technically neither does the Shakespearean sonnet. So as long as the poem sings in 14 lines with a pivot or turn somewhere within, I think one could call it a sonnet. This form was created by Barbara Dilworth. The elements of the Balanced Sonnet are: a quatorzain, made up of 2 California Rhyme Stanzas.. metered, iambic pentameter. rhymed, rhyme scheme ababcbc dedefdf. no placement of pivot prescribed. The Bina is an invented verse form created by Bob Newman at the Poetry By Way and found on the internet at his site and at Poetry Base . The Bina is a shortened variation of the Sestina. The elements of the Bina are: a pentastich. A poem in 5 lines. metered, predominantly iambic pentameter(or close). Lines are equal length. composed with end words limited to 2 words that are repeated in numerical sequence and one of the words appears internally in L5. Words 1-2-2-1-2 with word 1 appearing midway in L5 L1 ends with word #1 L2 ends with word #2 L3 ends with word #2 L4 ends with word #1 L5 midway word #1, ends with word #2. Here is an example of a poem written using the Bina frame and following two thematic poetic genres, Aubaude and Serenade. "Ades" Stiilis Bina(2 love poems for Joe D.) by DC Martinson Aubade Cleaving half the horizon, the morning sun cuts across the eyelid of the earth, and in a forever-moment the earth is outside of now: not dawn, not morning. Yet I'd crave You, my morning; You, my earth. Serenade Shuttering up the horizon, the night throes – heavy blanket on the face of earth, regardless of the weather on the earth. Yet shroud me with Your fibrous self this night and I'd succumb: You, my night; You, my earth. The California Rhymed Stanza is a septet used in the Balanced Sonnet but could be used as a stand alone poem or be written in any number of stanzas. It was created by Barbara Dilworth and introduced at Vol Central. The elements of the California Rhymed Stanza are: stanzaic, written in any number of septets, 7 line stanzas. metered or not at the discretion of the poet. (When used in a sonnet, in deference to the sonnet form, iambic pentameter would be my choice.) rhymed, scheme ababcbc. Decrina is a longer version of the Sestina attributed to Bob Neuman but I couldn't find it at his website Poetry By Way. I did find it at Poetry Base however. Having written a Sestina, I can't imagine why anyone would even consider attempting a longer version of the form. The elements of the Decrina are: stanzaic, ten 10 line stanzas with a 5 line envoy, a total of 105 lines. metered, lines of equal length, like the Sestina, iambic pentameter or iambic tetrameter. repeated end words in a specific pattern. (Numbers represent words) 0123456789 1357902468 3704815926 7419630852 4938271605 9876543210 8642097531 6295184073 2580369147 5061728394 I can only assume the envoy is like the Sestina with even #ed words midline and odd #ed words as end words. 0-9,8-7,6-5,4-3,2-1 Domino Rhyme is a very clever innovation of Bob Newman which can be found at his site as well as many others on the internet. Much like a slinky, rhymes tumble from stanza to stanza, it is something he calls "remote rhyming". The elements of the Domino Rhyme are: stanzaic, written in any number of quatrains. metered, written in a loose tetrameter. Lines should be same length. rhymed. L2 and L3 of the first stanza rhyme with L1 and L4 of the next stanza and so on down until the last stanza when L2 and L3 rhyme with L1 and L4 of the first stanza. abcd befc eghf gijh ... iadj. The Fifty Dollar Tomato by Judi Van Gorder The puSlogh vagh is a little something for the Star Trek fan. This stanzaic form, according to Bob Newman is a Klingon form. Apparently the Klingon language has only 5 vowel sounds. To preserve the Klingon spirit of the verse one should only use the short vowel sounds of a e i o u as in bag-beg-big-bog and bug, no long vowel sounds such as May, me, my, moan, mule. . It is important to go by sound not spelling. You really should read Newman's description of the form for which I provide this link, Vol Central. I add no new insight, I am just passing on what I read there. The elements of the puSlogh vagh are: stanzaic, written in any number of cinquains. However until you speak Klingon fluently I recommend you stick with just one cinquain. isosyllabic, same number of syllables per line. The number of syllables is determined by the first line, it can be as few as 4 and as many as 10. composed using only short or soft vowel sounds as in fan, bend, it, opt, fun, mystic. No hard or long vowel sound as in ate, beet, lie, oak, June, my. composed with at least 2 "strongholds" within each line. The strong hold position is determined by the poet and established in the first line. A stronghold is specific syllabic positions for a repeated sound. In this case assonant rhyme. In other words, the vowel sound could be in the 3rd syllable of each line and 6th syllable of each line, or the 1st, 4th syllable and 6th syllable of each line. It could even be the 1st and 4th syllables with no end rhyme. etc.. written with a different key vowel in each line, the order of which is at the discretion of the poet. The vowel sound can be repeated once, twice or even more depending on the length of the line and inventiveness of the poet, but it must be repeated at least once in the strong hold position in each line. Here is an example, not great poetry but I'm just learning Klingon, so please forgive me. The strong hold is in the 3rd and 6th position of each line. The Hat and the Cat by Judi Van Gorder The cat smacked the straw hat when it saw the brown dog jump a net, a fun fetch that is won with some fun not a sin, just a win. The Scupham Sonnet is noted at Vol Central as not a "proper" sonnet, probably because of the lack of prescribed pivot. It was created by British poet Peter Scupham and uses the Scupham Stanza. The elements of the Scupham Sonnet are: a quatorzain made up of 2 Schupham stanzas (sixains) followed by a rhymed couplet. metered, iambic pentameter. rhymed, scheme abccba deffed gg. no prescribed place for a pivot but most good poetry naturally has a pivot or turn someplace within the poem. The Scupham Stanza is a sixain used in the Scupham Sonnet but which could be stand-alone poem or written in any number. It was created by British poet, Peter Scupham and is found at Vol Central. The elements of the Scupham stanza are: stanzaic, written in any number of sixains. metered or not at the discretion of the poet. (When using it in a sonnet, in deference to the form, iambic pentameter would be my choice.) rhymed, scheme abccba.

Each stanza in the book was originally meant to serve as a mini chapter. The two forms are sometimes thought to be the same but basically these are two different verse forms from the same origin, using the same physical frame but with different intent. I have found a few variations which I think are relatively new invented sonnet forms. It seems the variations can't agree on just how that envelope rhyme should be placed. The envelope sonnet found at Poetry Base and in Lewis Turco's Book of Forms, appears to be a variation of the Petrarchan Sonnet. It has a slightly skewed rhyme scheme allowing 2 more rhymes than its predecessor which by the way also uses envelope rhyme. The elements of the envelope sonnet found at Poetry Base are: an octave made up of 2 quatrains followed by a sestet. metered, iambic pentameter. rhymed. Rhyme scheme abbacddc efgefg or abbacddc efefef. composed with a pivot after L8. The envelope sonnet found at Poet's Garret suggests an Italian or French origin; I'm leaning toward the French because of the linking rhyme. And since the form is syllabic which is also a common feature of French forms I would tend to agree. But I could find no examples other than current ones on that site. From recalled shadows cast above and below disjointed thoughts intrude and wander lost. Perception stumbles, blinded, spun and tossed and latent dreams turn labored, gray and low. The Double Sonnet can be 1 poem made up of 2 sonnets. Given this description, the poem could employ a Sicilian Sonnet and a Shakespearean Sonnet or whatever variable combination of sonnets the poet chooses. The Double Sonnet can be a poem in which the sonnet rhyme scheme is doubled. This description would mean that the poem is made up of 2 sonnets of the same variation and rhyme scheme, such as 2 Wordsworth sonnets or 2 Terza Rima sonnets. The Double Sonnet can be a poem that doubles the sonnet octave and then doubles the sonnet sestet. This seems to be more like one sonnet doubled in size than 2 individual sonnets stuck together by proximity and theme. In this scenario there would be only one turn or pivot which I assume would occur near the end of the 2nd octave or during the 1st sestet.

This verse form appears to be a merging of Arabic meter and the sonnet. Exactly when and how this came about I have yet to pin down. Early Cornish verse is fragmented and stingy at best. The earliest literature in the Cornish language were fragments of religious plays. The language became all but extinct by the 18th century but what was preserved demonstrates some verse in octaves using 7 syllable loose trochaic lines and alternating rhyme. Unlike verse from other Celtic origins, deliberate use of alliteration or other devices of "harmony of sound" are not present. This sonnet form doesn't fit with these early findings so I can only assume that it arrived on the scene much later than originally presumed.
