Christmas as an atheist, 1995

The pumpkin soup did not soothe,
but neither did Oscar's death.
I did not stay for salad.
His turkey would have killed me.
The movie was “Romero”
and my unbelief was strong.
Blanketed and shivering
on my couch, I forced myself
to ignore their caroling.
It was Christmas, a decade
before my own chasuble,
two decades before picking
my mother up from the floor.

Pumpkin soup still does not soothe,
and never will Oscar's death.

Oh Marti, The pain of this screams from the page.  I think the most tangible image is "two decades before picking / my mother up from the floor."  The urgency of the moment and the helplessness are gut wrenching.  This is good writing.  We need more.

Thank you. It's been more than a year (I think) since I wrote anything new. (BTW, mom survived that Xmas mini-stroke from 3 years ago.) Hope you are well.

I'm glad to hear about your Mom.  It is a very real moment in your poem.  We've all taken a break but my experience the longer the break, the harder it is to get writing again.  Your poems always have depth and flow, it would be a shame to abandon that talent.

Marti, very nicely composed. In addition to the lines Judi already mentioned, my unbelief was strong was striking. For some reason I expected a less militant unbelief, but the next lines really drove the point home.

Blanketed and shivering/on my couch -- so un-cozy yet so expressive of the speaker's state of mind one almost can't blame him for the anger, for feeling the way he does. An excellent depiction of the passage of time, how life will always be life, and of how a person has evolved. Always a pleasure to see you.

Thanks, Tony. I am glad I finally wrote something.

Sometimes it's devolution, not evolution. At least as to how it's perceived. :)

I was actually sick that Xmas 1995, but I felt obligated to at least make an appearance at my neighbor's brownstone. Yes, the movie on TV was "Romero" and I was depressed for days.
