Down at the Hare and Pigeon

You say you want to be

a regular, sir, but I fear

we have certain standards.

Just about anybody

can be the occasional

yuckety-yuck

with gleaming eyes

and a loosened necktie

with a loud voice

with opinions,

with a credit card

swimming in the slops

all over the counter

but I arsk you where does it go?

It goes into headaches

and grief and shame, two-three months

before they show

their faces again. I mean,

look at Mike down there

a quiet civilised citizen,

he gets through fifteen gallons

of beer each week

maybe three quarts of whiskey

and not a murmur out of him,

a true gentleman. That, young sir,

is what you need to aspire to.

Interesting poem, sounds very nice. The idea of this poem is seen in some interesting way.

Thank you for sharing Ded.

Brendan very common ground this. I had to relate to this better probabaly to this "foreign territory" for most of the contributors here. It's just the pub/bar thing distinction, I liked the pub landlord's appreciation of the capacity of the regular, liked the whole in fact. Frank

Hello dedalus,

Nice to meet you :)

I like the narrative in this poem which showcases the publican's astute summation of his customers.

Sadly, perhaps the legendary quiet drinker whom Mike here represents is now passed into the mists of fiction:

...look at Mike down there

a quiet civilised citizen,

he gets through fifteen gallons

of beer each week

maybe three quarts of whiskey

and not a murmur out of him,

a true gentleman.

Good use of the conversational tone engages the reader effectively.
