douglas
how the night can conceal hundreds of emotions and feelings buried realities cloaked in a soft black velvet glove leaving only silhouettes hinting at a greater truth which lies just beneath the surface see the outlines of existence two dimensional uncomplicated mysterious lights in the darkness becoming diamonds night jewels illuminating millions of private secrets this is a man-made universe strewn across the surface of a shadowed earth cities around the world containing the hope and hopelessness of every inhabitant a burning cosmic collective of light a disparate unity the jazz of the universe which is both tragic and romantic. goldenlangur
Hi douglas, You depict well the perception of a Janus-like aspect of the human condition and the world. This is beautiful: a disparate unitythe jazz of the universe which is both tragic and romantic. Transcending this perceived duality is the ultimate goal for a Buddhist and so this poem struck a deep chord. Thank you for a great moment. dedalus
This is a lovely poem, Doug, which tells us ... just about what everyone knows. How people deal with all the stuff that their individual lives throw at them is where the real story lies: the comedy, boredom, tragedy, violence, romance, political beliefs, military adventures, economic theories, food and drink, the resigned or else horrified approach to inevitable death. All these things. In each generation, we repeat the same general themes, but never quite in the same way. I think the function of poetry is not to set out the parameters of human existence (by now well known) but to record the ways of response. We know the problem. So how do we fuckin deal with it?
