Frank E Gibbard
His final encounter one to one with a roadside bomb was in all probability inevitable. He knew the odds. Living to more or less extent deals differential hands in the haphazard gambles implicit in our existence. Few people participate in anything as deadly though as the voluntary risk attendant upon bomb disposal. One faulty move with explosives may be the very last, like playing Russian roulette but driven to the task by supreme sense of duty not devil-may-care daring or careless regard for the rich preciousness of all life. Such men as this must be driven by the exact antithesis, a heightened personal evaluation of the vital spark which inhabits humanity that they lay theirs on the line. tonyv
Though others may disagree, I'd characterize this as a sonnet, Frank. And I think it's one of your finest poems. It really gets the point across. Tony Quote Here is a link to an index of my works on this site: tonyv's Member Archive topic
