15-Minute Break

A hand hits a glass of water,

turning it to its side.

It does not matter which

decisions are consensual.

Is soiling reputation worse

than wet business proposals?

In simple English terms-

'It just happened.'

There is wisdom in putting

carpets on the floor

for glasses to fall on

and break quietly.

Do people understand

the urgency of the times?

There is only

a 15-minute break.

A wonderful window in an ordinary moment with resonance to the direness of the times: Loved these lines:

There is wisdom in putting

carpets on the floor

for glasses to fall on

and break quietly.

Do people understand

the urgency of the times?

Makes it resonant beyond or deeper into the moment...

Nice Work JJ!

This is another stellar poem from one of my favorite authors on this site. I loved the imagery, you seem to have well mastered the art of concrete imagery. A small suggestion if I may. The use of question marks in your work, while perhaps being technically necessary, does not lend itself well to the strength of your poem. For me at least, your lines become stronger when large punctuation such as question marks or exclamation points is left out. Just a thought, I enjoyed this read.

You portray workplace tension well in this poem. It's not quite set in a boiler room or call center, but could it take place in a cube farm with some on-edge middle management types in the mix? The poem is short and sweet. Enjoyed it a lot, Joel.

PDgb, thanks for the read and feedback. I have not tried punctuation-less poems yet.

Tony, I'm glad that the poem offers multitude of interpretations and that you enjoyed it.

An insightful and skilful write. It provoked in me a mental flash of battery hens who gobble up feed when a light is switched on. Benjamin

Hi, Joel. You are so good with expressing those small moments which are in the margins of our thinking, and you bring the attention to them. Very good. Impressed, as always.

Hi Joel, I haven't read one of your poems for a while and this one reminded me what a master of rhythm you are. A poet sees the ordinary and describes the extraordinary of it. You do that so well...

I loved this. ~~Tink
