fdelano
Just saying… My desk is next to a window where I can look out on the front lawn. Impeccable because of the money I pay a lawn guy. Tonight, it looks so level and perfect in the corner lamp light. So much care and money to create such orderliness without weeds and clover and rough edges. I spend about fifty to seventy-five dollars a month to keep a pro golf course surface for no reason but to fit in with the neighborhood level of care and maintenance. I would gladly buy a goat, but the town rulers would disapprove and likely have me incarcerated as a crazy old man. The irony is that, according to modern rules of decorum, they are right. If allowed, I would throw corn to chickens in the back yard and shoot squirrels that raid my bird feeders. In my town, it is illegal to fire off a sling-shot. I have a pellet gun waiting, useless against the law. Today, the guy who cuts and maintains my stupid lawn, gave me a John Deere cap, which he got free. Made me feel better, even though he is a nice guy and would never try to rip me off. Yes. I know how mundane is all this daily crap, but it’s real life and my money. For years, I have cut my lawn with several long-worn machines. Now, I cannot do the circuits and gladly pay the twenty bucks for a young, self-confident young man to zip over it with his John Deere mower for about five minutes. I pay him with cash. It’s rewarding to have an honest and enterprising man, who brings his young son to do run the leaf blower over the driveway, a man I know who would not cheat me for any amount of money. He filled two low spots and seeded them at no charge. If only he didn’t show up so goddam early.

tonyv
Oh yea. That yard work noise drives me crazy. (The stupid ice cream truck playing "Yankee Doodle Dandy" does, too.) As I've always said, grass is nice so long as someone else is cutting it. How many lifetimes -- not hours, not days, not weeks, not months, but lifetimes! -- have been squandered cutting grass?!?! I've done it for family (I myself live in the city, and outside there is pavement and concrete), but I wouldn't want to do it for top dollar for anyone else.
