One More Time

AAA cracks and whacks the fuselage

with steel fragments, small holes

causing rapid decompression in the rear

compartment crowded with four frozen

souls attempting to maintain their cool.

Frantically maneuvering to upside

down and pulling back on the stick

sends the small jet plane to clear air

and down into oxygen richer air.

No one bleeding. Back to the mission

at hand, all jammers working the threat

signals ahead of the approaching B-52

cell of three spreading tons of shrapnel below.

No lingering to watch the carnage,

turning off the targets but monitoring

scopes for signals seeking revenge.

Back in friendly territory, we loosen straps.

I’ll take a cold Bud, please, and don’t

wander away. Ring the bell. I’m

buying the bar. Tomorrow will surely

be another day.

This is vivid and nightmarish: to know that each moment could be the last; that an impersonal 'payload ' of destruction is delivered and the “cold Bud,” a reminder that respite is purely temporary.

Nice job juxtaposing the stress of the mission with the wind-down, Franklin. This is probably based on real life experience, but it makes me think of that series "Burn Notice" (starts again tomorrow). They go on all these harrowing missions, but when it's over they're always sipping mojitos by the water, lol.
