a chair
and the whiteness of oblivion
a chair and a candle
and a broken heart
everything has come full circle
things ha
ve run their course
like the pounding rain
and evaporation
and the forming of clouds
emotion is as intangible as steam
yet it is as visible

a hand
and the ghost of breath
a hand and a shattered soul
the remnants of taking the brave risk
all has come to nothing
love has wiped clean the slate yet again
a yearning that seduces us all
yet vanishes just as quickly and magically
as it appears

a sigh
and the heaving of a spirit
a sigh and the broken flower
shattered reminders of what once bloomed
so effortlessly
a life at my feet
in tatters and shreds and little pieces
the hopes that seemed so sure
now gone forever

a touch
and the softness of skin
a touch and the fleeting memory of caresses
dancing quietly out of vivid consciousness
detaching themselves from reality
mere photographs of what was
the ending is not the saddest part
when an affair is over
the remembrances of its start are...

Emotive, clear and yet nicely rhythmic. I liked the extended metaphors and:

"love has wiped clean the slate yet again
a yearning that seduces us all
yet vanishes just as quickly and magically
as it appears"

I like the re-use of the object in lines 1 and 3. And I just LOVE "ghost of breath".....

I admit to knowing little of forms of poetry or even a knowledge of its history. I have no credentials to criticize, but the verses seem separate and not in unity with the aim of the theme. But what do I know? I do love the images, and perhaps that is the theme. Still, a pleasure to read.

thanks for all of your comments. they are all appreciated.

fdelano - the poem is about lost love and is basically stream of consciousness; the abandoned lover exploring how he feels about his loss and moments shared - fragments of time together with another. so you were quite right to notice the separateness of these thoughts and yes, it's the various images of what was shared between two people that is the theme. ;)
