Downwind

My love has teeth

in her glittering eyes,

as hard as diamonds

as sharp as a nail:

I rarely fail

in my obsequious homage

to keep her pleasant,

to keep her off my tail

as these things go;

we are prey to the people we meet,

and meat to the people we know.

In Budapest,

not so many months ago

at that uneasy Hilton hotel

that overlooks the Chain Bridge

high on the Buda hill,

I looked down on the domed and spiky Parliament

above the Donau/ Danube/ Dvina,

greygreen, historical, insistent,

and thought I saw you

My heart leaped, it went boom.

No, no, no! Some other girl.

I need some room

where you won’t chase me,

not over Eastern Europe,

not even from 3rd to 5th Avenue,

and in time, who knows?

Everything will work out fine

so I tell myself, scratching my head,

looking over my shoulder,

wishing at times I were dead.

I know it is just a matter of fate:

the girl has only to sit and wait.

Drown your sorrows in drink, by all means, but the real sorrows can swim

Delightfully wicked, and for me a much truer than I would like bit of relational comedy/commentary/fantasy. I laughed uncomfortably. Good show (as THEY say)

Loved those opening lines which made me smile as I thought of the more traditional "O my Luve's like a red red rose That's newly sprung in June..." B.

I like the life of this piece.

A fun read.

Thanks.
